Song Hunting
I am a huge fan of Video Game and Film soundtacks.
There is something about the style of music used in these mediums that I just adore, from how it’s made and how it works to how it sounds. I have a large collection of soundtracks, and am always looking for new ones to pad out my shelves. It is one aspect of a game or film I pay a lot of particular interest to when deciding whether or not I like them.
With this in mind, a while ago I came across the game Rise of Nightmares, the kinect-based xBox exclusive game that many people remember for how terrible it was. I have never played this game, and probably never will, but what particularly stood out to me, as you have probably surmised by now, was its soundtack.
Amidst the general mediocrity-to-abysmal aspects of the game, the one, shining light of it is its soundtrack (at least, in my opinion). Just hearing it once, I knew I had to add it to my collection.
However, this proved problematic.
It seems that very few people have any interest in this game, and none at all seem to care about its soundtrack, which made finding it very difficult. No rips can be found on YouTube, no CDs are for sale on any site I searched. I became tempted to acquire the game myself and learn how to datamine it in order to get it straight from there.
But then, I had an idea.
After much searching, I was able to find information regarding the game’s composer - a man named Ron Fish, who some of you might know from his work on Batman: Arkham City and Inversion - and through this info, found his website.
To my utter joy, he has a SoundCloud account, on which he has actually posted a number of his tracks from the aforementioned games, including Rise of Nightmares.
Though, this joy was hampered a little when I discovered that a couple of particular tracks I had enjoyed were not to be found.
Unperturbed, I sent him a rather lengthy email (much akin to this post) expressing my gratitude for his work, briefly extolling its brilliance in an otherwise murky experience of a video game, and asking him whether he would be able to help me in finding the missing tracks.
The man is wonderful. He actually responded to me, thanking me for my interest and briefly talking about his experience creating this music, however, he was unable to help me with regards to the music, due to agreements with Sega.
Dispite this disappointing end to the story, I am still immeasurably glad that he took the time to respond to me, and he can rest assured that I will be a loud voice in drawing others to his work in the future.
Thank you, Ron Fish, I eagerly await your next forays into Game Soundtrack Composing!
