Vanessa kicks her legs over the side of the building and looks up at the night sky. “He had me lie a lot,” Vanessa shrugs, “I’m decent at it when I plan out my lies. All sorts of things. Lying to CPS. Lying to the judge. Saying a boy from school gave me those pills, but I’d never consider taking them. Saying he didn’t drive under the influence on purpose his drink was spiked, I was with him all day I’d know. He accidentally left me there. He never meant for me to see mama’s bod-”
Vanessa cuts herself off.
“I make it sound worse than it is,” She smiles, “You had a serial killer as a dad, whatever he was doing probably was a million times worse.”
She never answered his question. Maybe he didn’t even hear her. Sometimes all she hears is herself, herself and the twisted version in her head.
