It’s been only a week that you’ve become an officer, or, well, the rookie everyone loved to pick on. It was a customary joke: rile up the newbie just enough, get some laughs, then resume your tasks like nothing happened. You felt more like the assistant in the office than an officer, if you’re being honest.
“Rookie, coffee, please!”
”Hand these papers to the boss for me, yeah?”
”Car needs gas, fill it up for me, will ya?”
The others would laugh, giving you a firm pat on your back to make sure you knew they were joking, at least for the most part. By your fourth week the jokes started to die down once you began getting the hang of things, and you’ve gotten along with almost all of your co-workers, all but one.
Vanessa Shelly.
She was, to say the least… competitive.
And honestly, there was something about that just drew you in and excited you.
Maybe it was the eye rolls or the scoffs whenever she saw your names next to each other on the patrol board. You've caught her staring at you a few times around the office while you were just minding your business, plotting, or judging. It didn't matter. You weren't fazed by her words anymore. Not like she had much bark or bite to begin with.
One night in the office, when the day shift was packing up to leave after a long day of back-to-back emergencies, you were asked to retrieve some paper towels from the janitor's closet to clean a spillage. Glad to know they could still count on you to be their errand runner.
Something about this part of the office made the hairs at the back of your neck stand. The office was mostly empty, they were still changing shifts. And the flickering light down the hallway added to the eerie effect.
Probably another prank.
Some of these guys were too old to be pulling these kinds of stunts…but oh well, what could you do?
Walking into the janitor's closet, you try to find the light switch on the wall, but much to your dismay, it wasn't there.
In the middle of the room was a lightbulb with a string attached to it.
“Of course they never changed the wiring in here…” You pull down the string, turning on the light. At the same time, the door behind you closed with a soft click, making you turn with a sharp gasp.
“Nice one… jerks.” You whispered the last bit as you grabbed the paper towels. The knob wouldn't budge. A rattling sound came from inside the door, like it had been locked from the outside.
“Guys, LET ME OUT!” You cried, banging on the door with your free hand. They wouldn't stoop so low as to leave you here and have the night shift deal with you, right? You didn't even know those guys.
Minutes go by, and all you can hear is muffled laughter and footsteps inching closer.
“I think they must’ve left.”
You recognize that voice. Before you can shuffle away from the door, it is swung open, making you stumble backwards by the sudden fright. Your back hits the wooden shelf behind you, and you drop the paper towels on impact.
“I didn't expect to find you slacking off, rookie.” Vanessa jeers, glancing down at you with a brow raised. You hated how she looked down at you, like you were a nuisance that only existed to make her life harder.
“Really, I mean,” she starts, taking a step closer. Instead of reaching her hand out to help you, she grabbed the paper towels and turned around.
“You should take your job a bit more seriously. Someone could’ve slipped in the time you were gone!” she continued. Once you were on your feet, you were about to retort, tell her she was wrong, maybe throw in a quip yourself. But the door closed once again, now leaving you trapped with Vanessa of all people.
“No, no, SHIT!” You rush towards the door and jiggle the knob before huffing in frustration. Vanessa tilts her head, then pushes you to the side, messing with the doorknob.
“Damn it, what did you—”
“I’ve been trapped in here for God knows how long! Running every single errand you and your cop buddies have THROWN at me with zero complaints!” You snapped. You honestly didn't mean to, but you’ve been trapped in a hot closet, and now you're being accused of messing with the locks. Vanessa looks at you wide-eyed, like she wasn't expecting you of all people to raise your voice. She tries to speak, but you cut her off. You refused to hear another word from her mouth.
“NO, Vanessa, you don't get it! Everyone is done with the stupid jokes but you? You've treated me like shit since day ONE! Barely speak to me on patrols, and find ways to irritate me while I'm trying to do paperwork. The last thing I need is to be accused of messing with a goddamn doorknob!”
Your body trembled as adrenaline began to spread within your body. You never thought you'd get the chance to speak to her like this, but it was a nice change seeing her in your position for once. Vanessa places the paper towels onto the wooden rack, giving you a sympathetic look. Was she even capable of feeling that?
“Hey, breathe.” She takes your hand, but you move it away harshly. The last thing you needed right now was to be touched by her.
“Listen, getting angry isn't going to help this situation. Just breathe!” Vanessa raises her voice slightly. You hated that you agreed with her, but she was right. It really wasn't going to help. It was like something switched in her. This wasn't the Vanessa you knew.
“I know you hate me. No need to make me your good deed of the day.” Crossing your arms, you were about to raise your fist to bang on the door again, but Vanessa stops you, grabbing hold of your wrist.
“Let go!”
“I don't hate you!”
“Lies!” You try to wiggle your wrist out of her grasp, you never realized just how strong the blonde was. Vanessa pins you to the wall, holding your wrist above your head. Before you could use the other to pry her off, she'd already pinned that one above your head too.
“Listen!” She shouts, her green eyes staring into yours with an intensity you’ve never seen before. Her pupils were blown, and you could feel a slight tremble in her hands. She smelled like a mix of her soft perfume and mint from the gum she chewed earlier. She was much too close for comfort, yet the way your heart was racing was deceiving.
Vanessa was quiet for a beat, her eyes flicking between yours and then to your lip until they finally fell onto yours again.
“Speak, Vanessa,” you muttered, wiggling your wrist, but her grasp was still as solid as it was when she trapped you.
“I can't do my job when you’re around.” she says, her grip tightening gradually, making your face contort slightly in pain. Vanessa sighs, closing her eyes, taking a moment to think of the right thing to say. There wasn't much she could say to excuse her behavior, but she wasn't about to lose out on this moment now that she had you in her grasp, literally.
“So that’s what this—”
“You distract me, and it's so annoying. On your second week here, you already received a raise and didn't need to prove anything.”
You scoff, trying to push her away, but she only puts more weight onto your wrists.
“Is that what this is about? Me getting a raise just because I do my job?”
“It's not just that. You never gave me the same smile or laugh you gave our seniors.”
“Because their pranks are over and done with, but you kept on! Turning it into something passive aggressive more than anything! The comments under your breath, the glances—I noticed it all, Vanessa!” You raised your voice. Vanessa was full-on trembling now. She wasn't good with feelings or confessions. She's well aware of that, but she never realized just how badly she let things get.
“passive agr— you never bothered to give me the time of day. I don’t hate you!” She shouted. Everyone outside was probably listening in on what was being said. The embarrassment of them hearing made you want to crumble.
“Do I really need to spell it out for you? God…” Vanessa rolls her eyes, her face is flushed, and finally, she releases you from her death grip. You rubbed your wrists. You hadn't realized how tightly she was holding them. They were marked and sore.
You knew what Vanessa was talking about, and it irked you that you felt the same… this wasn't supposed to happen, especially with her.
Vanessa leans in, her lips just ghosting yours. You could’ve turned your face away, pushed her back, and begun banging on the door again, but you didn't. God, how you hated her but needed to kiss her, wrapping your arms around her neck and pulling her into a kiss. Vanessa stumbles back, the kiss never breaking even as she's trying to find her footing.
You part your lips slightly, allowing her tongue to explore your mouth with curious vigor, as if she’s been waiting to kiss you since the day you began working here. One thing's for sure, no one has ever kissed you so intensely before.
You slowly begin to pull away, but Vanessa pulls you back in by your belt, jerking you into her body.
“Where do you think you’re going?” she asks in between breathless kisses. She didn't allow you to break away for air, not like you wanted to anyway. You’d die happily in this closet on her lips.
“I—”
Vanessa was cut off by the knob rattling and muffled voices from behind the door. Quickly, you both move away from each other. You grab the paper towels as Vanessa composes herself, smoothing out the wrinkles from her uniform.
The door swings open, revealing one of your co-workers. As if you needed another reason to be embarrassed, she couldn't tell... right?
“We need to have this door fixed by the morning. Sorry you had to be trapped with Ness, rookie.” The woman says, standing to the side allowing you to walk out, Vanessa was close behind. She grabs the paper towels out of your hand and walks off without a word. “I was going to—”
“I got it.” She says, turning her face and flashing you a smile. As if it couldn't get any worse, your co-worker snickers and asks.
“The hell did you two do in there?” she whispers, stopping you in your tracks. You open your mouth to speak, but nothing comes out. Right on cue, Vanessa calls for help, you rush to her side.
Crouching down to help her clean the spillage, you didn't say anything at first. Her hand brushed over yours.
"We should do this more often." Vanessa suggested, you almost choked on your saliva at how suggestive her voice was.
"Excuse me?" You whispered, your face heated at her comment.
"A date—is that acceptable for you?" She clarifies, gathering the used paper towels, rising to her feet, and throwing them away.
"Is this another one of your cruel jokes, Vanessa?" You stand, crossing your arms defensively. Vanessa only smirks and replies.
"Meet me in front of your place tomorrow night at 9. Then we'll see who's joking." She walks off, leaving you speechless.
"And wear something formal!" she added, leaving the office for the night. Now all eyes were on you.
No one needs to know what happened, and in fact, you wanted them to keep guessing. No matter what the latest office rumors were. You just laughed at the fact that you got to taste Vanessa first, and now, she was yours.
