Rook Info Compilation part 1: Family

Rook is from Sunset Savanna, and we hear a story during Spectral Soiree from when he was six years old:

He explains that he became lost in the jungles and, without magic, was forced to survive by breaking a rock into a knife, whittling a shield and braiding grass into rope. He says he wore mud to mask his scent and dug holes to hide it, slept under leaves for camouflage and, at one point, became stuck in quicksand for 72 hours until he was able to pull himself out via a warthog.

Rook says he also fought a tiger that had been hunting him obsessively and was stung by a poisonous insect that left him “flitting in and out of delirium,” which is when he saw a ghost that he followed to the edge of a river, which is where his mother found him.

Rook’s tale impresses Sebek but Trey is incredulous, believing it to be an elaborate joke.

(Parts of Rook's story seem reminiscent of Disney's "Tarzan")

In Book 6 Rook explains that one of his ancestors was an “avid traveler” who constructed villas containing teleports all over the world.

Epel comments, “Don’t you need some kind of special government permission for that?”

When asked what it is that his family does, Rook refuses to elaborate.

Rook is the third oldest of six siblings and says that his entire family only gets together about once a year, as it is difficult for everyone’s schedules to line up.

Epel describes Rook’s family villas as “spectacular.” Rook says that he would be happy to invite Vil and the entire NRC dance group to visit for a pajama party one day.

Being raised in opulence may explain why Rook is so comfortable with observing the decorum required by Pomefiore and is able to teach Epel proper table manners despite not originally being of the dorm (having transferred in from Savanaclaw).

Rook has a voice line of “You think I’m odd? Then clearly you need to learn more about me,” but whenever people press for details he refuses to indulge them, such as when Sebek asks about his family during Spectral Soiree:

Trey lies about seeing a ghost to derail Sebek and protect Rook’s privacy, saying that he has noticed that Rook avoids talking about personal matters during club meetings and he might not appreciate people prying into his private life.

Rook says that he is forever grateful for Trey’s discretion.

Leona seems to be an exception to his rule, with Rook inviting him to ask whatever he likes during his birthday interview, perhaps knowing that Leona has no interest in learning about him and would thus refuse.

Rook Info Compilation part 8: Stalking and Lying

Rook will secretly observe people from afar and appear without warning, which we see him to do Deuce, Grim and Ace (twice), Kalim, Leona and Trey.

Rook explains that the trick to hunting is closely observing one’s target, which would explain the vignette where we learn he once stalked Jade for several days.

Jade notices him on his own and eventually confronts him at Azul’s behest. Rook says he took an interest in Jade as a sea creature on land: “Your eating habits, idiosyncrasies, sleep schedule, heart rate…I have recorded all of these glimmers and more…Now if I should find a sea creature in my crosshairs, I should be able to dispatch it with ease.”

Prior to Beanfest Rook offers advice to members of the opposing team, and when called out for it explains that he simply wants them to all enjoy the game together.

Suspicious, Ortho tests his sincerity by measuring fluctuations in his heart rate and other vital signs, ultimately declaring that Rook is not lying.

After explaining the information he gleaned from the group (“A true enemy will never loom over you, a menacing glower in his eye. It is he who hovers in your periphery with a smile that you must be wary of”) Trey comments that Rook must be a good liar, despite how Rook claims otherwise.

During Spectral Soiree Sebek, too, comments on Rook’s heart rate, which—combined with Rook’s flattery—convinces him to trust Rook, whom he had been accusing of plotting against them.

Trey comments, “Rook, you’re not about to tell me you can manipulate your own heart rate, are you?” And Rook responds, “Why, yes,” calling the results of both Ortho’s and Sebek’s tests into question.

Ortho explains that he wants to know more about Rook because once he caught Rook by surprise and "found his pulse was completely steady, no fluctuations at all. Was he surprised, but then regained his composure in an instant? Or was he unfazed the whole time? I've secretly been curious about it."

(Cater responds, "Somehow I think Rook would be a harder subject to study than the school...")

Rook will occasionally refer to “fieldwork,” which Vil explains means, “meddling in the affairs of people from other dorms.”

There is a running theme of characters like Epel and Trey commenting on how Rook scares them.

Rook Info Compilation part 15: Rook and Vil (pt4)

Rook says that, once they were better acquainted, one of the first things that Vil told him to do was to take care of his nails, as his hands were callused from gripping his bow string, with his skin dry and cracked.

Rook says that he hardly paid attention to his hands because he typically wears gloves (in the game guide there is a memo about how Rook wears gloves as often as he does in order to not leave fingerprints).

Vil says that Rook did not leave a very good impression when they first met: Vil was reading a script on a bench in the school’s courtyard when Rook approached him to compliment him on being a convincingly cold, tyrannical, tantrum-prone fiend in a recent play.

Rook claims he was “terribly nervous,” but Vil calls him a liar.

Vil explains that, after that first meeting, Rook started approaching him without any encouragement from Vil to “share his completely unsolicited opinions on (Vil’s) performances, then go on his way. Both his positive impressions AND negative ones.”

Vil says that over time he realized that Rook’s observations were oddly perceptive. One day he asked Rook how he would have performed a certain scene which Rook spoke critically of, and “He went on for FIVE HOURS STRAIGHT.” (Rook: “What a rewarding discussion that was.”)

Vil says that he had been convinced that he knew more about theater and art than anyone else his age, but “Rook quickly disabused (him) of that notion with his breadth of knowledge.”

After that, the two started meeting up regularly in the courtyard after school.

At the end of Book 5, Rook justifies voting for Royal Sword Academy by explaining that Vil lacked conviction: “No amount of validation from the rest of the world will ever leave you fulfilled. Even if you wind up old, grimy, and stooped over, if you were to truly believe that you are the fairest of all despite that, even the Magic Mirror of legend wouldn’t contest your claim. The strength and pride to believe in yourself is what marks the true fairest one of all.”(This scene later plays out as Rook describes in Book 6.)

Rook and Vil were on the same team for Beanfest in their second year and Rook says that “no one could mount any effective resistance” against them.

During pre-event stretches Vil notices that Rook’s shoulders and thighs have more muscle mass than usual. Rook explains that he had spent the previous month doing higher-intensity training specifically in preparation for Beanfest, as his wish to compete against Vil was granted.

Rook immediately pairs with Trey for the event, citing that teams need leadership to persevere, but during the game he asks Trey to not interfere with his capturing of Vil, which he successfully does after Vil runs out of beans. (Vil: “You’re stooped low, crouched like a predator. I can barely keep my aim trained on you!”)

During Phantom Bride Rook comments, “Would a bride who’s spent so long seeking her groom be willing to relinquish him? Were it myself, I would never let my dear beloved go.”

At the end of the event Vil is displeased with how long Epel and Rook took to come to his rescue and Rook apologies, saying, “I found myself lost so often without you to light my way,” but Epel points out he had actually been “busting up ghosts with giddy abandon.”

Rook Info Compilation part 10: Positivity Beauty (pt1)

Trey says that he doesn’t think he has ever seen Rook in a bad mood, and Rook does seem to be very positive in general: he compliments Riddle on engulfing a ghost in flames (and ruining their plans to save Idia) by saying he is sure even the ghost himself is giving a standing ovation (Ace follows with, “Most definitely not”).

He later encourages a rescued Idia with a “sappy pep talk” that Idia does not appreciate, assuring him that someone wonderful awaits Idia in the future.

Rook also encourages Ortho during Spectral Soiree and compliments members of Pomefiore on their acting during Halloween, despite how Vil is not impressed.

Rook is Jade’s judge for the Culinary Crucible and Jade says that while he knows that Rook would react positively to anything that he presents, he would still like to impress him.

Jade then prepares a dish for him that paralyzes Rook’s tongue with mushrooms that were not a part of the original recipe. Despite the surprise Rook says that it was “quite the novel experience,” he could have it for every meal and defends Jade to the ghost chef.

For Rook’s own Culinary Crucible he spends a lot of the time watching something besides his oven, to the ghost chef’s confusion.

It is revealed that he was watching Cater and basking in the beauty of Cater exerting such effort throughout the lesson, which was also the reason he joined the course.

Rook compliments every person who auditions for the VDC in Book 5, awarding everyone full marks.

Epel says that Rook is always showering people with compliments, and when Ace says “compliments aren’t that flattering when the person’s tossing ‘em out left and right” Rook says, “The world is filled with beautiful things, and I simply love each and every one of them.”

Rook also compliments Azul during Glorious Masquerade, saying that his singing was pitch perfect from their very first practice and only proceeded to improve.

Azul seems unnerved by Rook’s ability to deduce what he was working on merely by listening during rehearsals and asks him to hold off on further compliments, sliding across the screen and away from Rook. (Azul might be uncomfortable with excessive praise in general.)

Rook is often referring to things are beautiful, including: Deuce’s devotion to Riddle, a photograph he takes for a visitor during Halloween, Ortho’s meteor shower during Wish Upon a Star, an angry Riddle, Idia’s passion for a horror movie, the Mirror Chamber and Vil’s fans.

Rook is big on beauty, with his wish in the Wish Upon a Star event being “to drink in every last bit of beauty in the world,” as he wants “to see all the beauty the world has to offer, and to grasp its essence.”

During Port Fest Ruggie is surprised to learn that Rook cannot play any instruments and Rook explains, “I love few things more than beautiful art. I adore music, of course, and have attended many concerts. However, I have little interest in playing instruments myself. I have no need, you see, as merely listening to skilled performers is enough to fill my hearts and then some.”

Rook says he holds beauty in the highest regard, but his conception of it “isn’t based solely on appearance.”

Rook Info Compilation part 20: Senses

It is often mentioned that Rook has excellent eyesight, hearing and sense of smell: he says that his eyesight is keen enough that he does not need to rely on tools like binoculars.

We see him read the text of a book from a great distance, recognize Leona from across a field while he himself is inside the school and recognize Ortho flying through the sky in the Wish Upon a Star event.

Vil says that Rook’s eyesight is “absurdly keen” and he even impresses Lilia with how well is he able to see, saying, “I am confident that my eyes are at least as keen as yours.”

Lilia observes that Rook’s hearing is just as good as his eyesight.

Rook says that “a sense of smell is a huntsman’s best friend,” which is why he dislikes scents and does not wear them unless explicitly ordered to by Vil.

When Floyd asks why he does what Vil tells him to Rook explains it is “So that I may stand by his side. He is the fairest in all the school. This is a small price to pay to appreciate his beauty from a place of honor.”

In Rook’s dorm vignette an unknown attacker ruins one of Vil’s Film Club costumes and the members of the club are quick to accuse members of Savanaclaw, as the assailant intentionally slashed the fabric with scissors in a way that was meant to imitate claw marks.

Rook alone deduces that the damage was not done by claws and is able to approximate how tall the attacker may be based on the angle at which they slashed the costume.

Rook successfully identifies the assailant (a member of the Film Club’s own costume department, who framed Savanaclaw in a fit of jealousy over how close Rook and Epel are to Vil), claiming that he realized the destroyed costume was fake based on how poorly it was sewn.

The costumer volunteers to quit the club as punishment for what he did, but Rook insists that he atone for his crimes by continuing to contribute.

Epel compliments Rook on being able to tell that the costume was a fake by looking at it and Rook reveals that that had been a lie: he had been able to tell by the scent. As the fake costume hadn’t smelled of Vil’s unique cologne, he’d known it wasn’t real.

Rook teases Epel about guessing what he had for lunch on scent alone, only to say, “Not even my sense of smell is as keen as that,” revealing it was a joke.

(This line was rewritten on EN into “I am a man, not a bloodhound,” but there is a theory that Rook may not actually be human, and in the original game he has never claimed to be.)

Rook says that he has excellent stamina (which Vil confirms) and he is also able to tell how long he has been asleep within a 10-minute margin of error. (“Learning to assess how long you’ve been aware of your surroundings is essential for any huntsman.”)

Rook is also able to detect when Silver tries to hide himself during Spectral Soiree, despite all the training Silver has received as a guardsman.

Rook Info Compilation part 5: Rook and Leona

Leona and Rook are both in Class 3-A, and Rook seems to adore Leona: he tells another Pomefiore student, “If those sharp fangs of (Leona’s) pierced my windpipe, why, I’d be done for in an instant. The very notion makes my heart quiver.”

He interrupts Leona at lunch (because “mid-meal is when creatures are the second-most vulnerable, right after sleeping”) and when Leona decides to change seats because he can’t eat in peace with Rook watching him from the side, Rook invites him out to dinner so that they may look at one another from across a table instead.

Leona leaves and Rook reflects, “it’s rather cute the way his tail thrashed about when he’s irate…the stronger the prey, the more I am driven to ensnare it.”

Leona skips a class they have together with Vil, to Rook’s disappointment, and Vil seems unamused by Rook’s obsession.

Rook responds, “Is the Roi du Poison perhaps jealous? You’re the fairest in the school, of course. You don’t need to feel threatened.”

Rook says he could still watch Leona all day and never tire of it, and, “I so ache to corner that calm, collected quarry just enough to make him bare his fangs. Oh, to find myself in the position to make him squirm!”

Vil tells Rook to rein himself in on provoking Leona (Rook: “Is that an order, sir?” - Vil: “You’re welcome to take it that way.”), threatening to remove him from his position of housewarden if he gets Pomefiore into trouble.

In Book 5 Rook invites Leona to join the VDC audition, complimenting his athleticism, physique, voice and saying that Leona and Vil dancing and singing together would be “a feast for the senses.”

Rook corners Ruggie in a vignette, demanding to know Leona’s weakness and refusing to let him go (“I am a most willful hunter. I’ll not be leaving until you divulge that which I wish to know”).

Rook offers Ruggie some of Vil’s hair oil in exchange for information about Leona, petting his tail and tickling him into submission.

Ruggie acquiesces after Rook threatens to turn his attentions from Leona onto Ruggie himself, telling Rook that Leona dislikes vegetables.

Rook is satisfied, explaining that more damaging information may suffice for a mere beast, but his opponent is Leona: “I prefer something more…exhilarating. Like when one slides a pawn across the entire chessboard. Or like when one leads a beauty in their first dance.”

(Even after getting the information he wanted, however, Rook continues to touch Ruggie’s tail against his protests and asks if the texture would suit a scarf better than a carpet or coat.)
