Gives nose/forehead kisses: Sam. He’s taller and he’ll just lean down and catch Rachel by surprise.

Gets jealous the most: Rachel’s usually the more jealous one but Sam’s still a little touchy when ex-boyfriends get mentioned just because of how much bad luck he’s had in the past. 

Picks the other up from the bar when they’re too drunk to drive: Rachel. She knows better than to get too drunk in public because of PR, but when Sam does she makes sure to go escort him home. 

Takes care of on sick days: Rachel’s really high maintenance, but SAm tries to take care of her anyway -- it keeps him pretty busy running around when she’s sick. 

Drags the other person out into the water on beach day: Sam. He’s the more playful one in general

Gives unprompted massages: Sam. Rachel’s hands are tiny so she’s not that good at giving them anyway

Drives/rides shotgun: Sam. Usually if they’re somewhere where someone’s driving it’s because Rachel’s visiting him in Ohio so it’s his car anyway.

Brings the other lunch at work: Rachel. She does it to be nice but also to scope out Sam’s coworkers and make sure there are no cute ones after her man

Has the better parental relationship: Both have solid family lives and they always bring the two groups together at the holidays

Tries to start role-playing in bed: Rachel “jokingly’ suggested he act like his favorite superhero in bed and Sam took it way too much to heart.

Embarrassingly drunk dancer: Sam. His white chocolate moves are pretty bad anyway

Still cries watching Titanic: Rachel. Sam watches with her and wishes it was Avatar instead the whole time

Firmly believes in couples costumes: Rachel. Sam doesn’t dislike them, she’s just more on the ball (anyone remember the cat calendars?)

Breaks the expensive gift rule during Christmas: Rachel. Sam’s too careful with his money ever since he was homeless.

Makes the other eat breakfast: They both take good care of themselves so this is never an issue.

Remembers anniversaries: Sam remembers the “real” ones but Rachel’s made him a calendar of pretty much every first in their relationship

Brings up having kids: Sam’s definitely the more family oriented one, but he knows not to mention them until Rachel’s been

"Rachel Berry has died."

Sam stared at the man at their door. He was dressed in black, and his shoes were all shiny and stuff. What did a guy with shoes that shiny and clean know about something as messy as death and dying?

As much as Sam wanted the man to go away, though, he didn't seem to move. "Son, do you hear me? Miss Berry passed early this morning. She was on her way to -- "

The words all started to blend together, reminding him of that teacher on... crap, he couldn't remember what it was now. Charlie Brown? Everything felt numb, and empty, and blank. Sam couldn't focus on anything, except the same words that were playing over and over again in his head.

"Rachel Berry has died. Rachel Berry has died. Rachel Berry has died."

How was this fair? How could he have lost Finn, the guy who had taken him in, the guy who had given him a chance to have the high school experience he'd always wanted, and then three years later lost Rachel, the first girl who ever seemed to love him back just as much as he loved her?

Life wasn't fair; that had never been a secret to Sam. Things hadn't been easy for the Evans family, but things had never been this hard. The man in front of him was still talking, but Sam couldn't bear to pretend to listen to him anymore.

"I'm sorry, I just really need to be alone," he explained, shutting the door in the man's face midsentence and turning to face the apartment he and Rachel shared -- had shared, that would now be his and his alone.

Her stuff was still everywhere; she'd touched it just this morning. Sam had watched her pick up her bowl of cereal, fill it with food, take slow bites out of it with a spoon, pausing to laugh at his impressions. She'd left it on the counter, asking Sam to clean up for her, and he'd promised he'd get it done before she got home from rehearsal that night.

She wasn't coming home from rehearsal now. She wasn't coming home ever again.

Sam sat down on the kitchen stool, burying his head in his hands and looking at the still-dirty cereal bowl that she'd had her last meal out of. He felt sick to his stomach, and he didn't know what to do. How did people cope with this kind of stuff? He couldn't do this; he hadn't been able to do it with Finn, and he sure as hell couldn't do it with Rachel.

Looking up at the ceiling, blinking back the wetness that had finally started in his eyes, Sam wished that there was some kind of window into the heavens, some way he could talk to Rachel and say good-bye.

But there wasn't. Sam may have believed a lot of things, but he knew that he couldn't see an angel watching over him, or talk to them, or let them know he loved them one last time.

"Take care of her, Finn. She was always meant to be with you anyway," Sam finally whispered, knowing it fell on deaf ears but praying that it was a possibility all the same. That tiny, morbid thought that she could at least be with the guy she'd really loved now was the only thing keeping him from completely falling apart long enough to pick up his phone and, with shaky fingers, tap a message to Kurt and Blaine and Artie and Santana telling them that they all needed to come to his and Rachel's apartment, now.

"…..HAS DIED." FINISH IT IN MY ASK.
