In "Root Path” before Root finds out what role she played in Cyrus Wells's life, she's all airy and flirty with Shaw. (The protein bar scene)

After she finds out, you can see the shame, the guilt. Root isn't able to talk with Shaw about any of it, and I don't think this one is on Shaw.

Look how different Root is with Shaw when she tried to check her bandages. Here, Root uses flirtation to shut Shaw out. “I love it when you play doctor” Her demeanour, her affect. All wrong. She just doesn't want to be seen by Shaw so she makes sure Shaw leaves 💔

In “Allegiance “ , you can see that Shaw is hurt by Root's comment. Especially with Shaw's background as a doctor and how she was dismissed. So “playing doctor” is unkind. In this episode , Shaw refers to Root as a "Cochlear Cuckoo", which I thought was incredibly offensive. This is Shaw, wearing her armor again, feeling unsafe. Also notice how they have no scenes together?

In the episode after that, “Most likely to…” Root calls to apologize for leaking their location to Vigilance. But that's not all she's apologizing for.

I truly think this was their "rift". In “Death Benefit”, they truly mend their relationship, when Root asks Shaw to join her.
