Sign Painters: The Movie

On Wednesday 23 March, Site Gallery’s young people’s group, the Society of Explorers, hosted a screening of ‘Sign Painters: The Movie’, directed by Faythe Levine and Sam Macon. The screening of the film was followed by a Q&A, led by the young people from the Society of Explorers and including Rory Pilgrim. The discussion covered many topics, including sign painting’s relationship with capitalism, the issues around industries becoming overtaken by digital media, and the differences and nuances between the American and British sign painting traditions. It was a great night!

Resident artist Rory Pilgrim has been working with Sheffield-based sign maker David Andrews to create the wonderful and vibrant signs which are filling the gallery as the residency continues. 

On Wednesday 25th, our young people’s group, the Society of Explorers, will present a one-off screening of the US documentary film Sign Painters, a celebration of the hand-painted sign industry. 

Here is a short film about the legacy and future of hand written signs in Dublin.

Our young people’s group, the Society of Explorers, presents a one-off screening of the US documentary film Sign Painters, a celebration of the hand-painted sign industry. Directed by Faythe Levine and Sam Macon, the film examines the history of the craft, the desire to keep traditional elements alive, the impact of technology and an appreciation of the balance between art and commerce.
