a defiant kiss (cal & rose)

rose couldn’t remember a time when she’d been as angry as she had been feeling the last couple of weeks and right now, with cal right in front of her, the rage that she felt that had been simmering just under the surface was now boiling over. anger at him, anger at herself for not realizing it sooner, anger at... whatever the hell this place was that had taken all of her memories of this man, of jack, of the memories that mattered the most to her... rose was angry. no, angry wasn’t strong enough of a word for how she felt. she was so irate that her hands were shaking as she brought her forearms up to push his hands off of her and she landed a forceful punch to his nose. “DO. NOT. FUCKING TOUCH ME, CAL.” she shouted, her face bright red. if people were staring as they walked on by, rose didn’t notice and she didn’t care. let him be embarrassed. it was a small price for lying to her for months, for pretending that he didn’t remember anything from before, all so he could pursue her again. he didn’t deserve a second chance with her. no way in hell, especially now. “you... you...” she stopped, taking a breath to calm down enough to get her words out in some sort of intelligible way. “you knew... you’ve remembered all of this time. i know you have because i remember how you and i met here and you didn’t realize that I had forgotten my real life yet. so you started this little game where you thought you could just ignore everything that happened with you and i before. WELL, GUESS WHAT? I REMEMBER NOW. game’s over, I remember everything that happened on that godforsaken ship. how you had me followed, how you thought you could possess me, how you took a damn gun and shot at me and jack.” fuck, JACK, he was here... she’d seen him a couple of times and had blown him off. she had to find him again. once she got finished dealing with this asshole. “WELCOME TO THE CONSEQUENCES OF ALL YOUR FUCKING ACTIONS. you... stay away from me, don’t call me, don’t text me, if you see me in the street or in a fucking coffee shop you don’t come near me and don’t talk to me. same goes for jack when i manage to find him again here, you leave him alone or so help me god, i will destroy you and your pathetic existence. GOODBYE, cal.”

rose couldn’t remember the last time she’d spoken to her biological parents back home, but frankly... she stopped keeping track a long time ago. she was so happy with the way her life was going the last few years, none of the other bullshit that she’d run away from mattered. she had a great circle of friends and in a lot of ways her coworker, john, had become like a dad to her. family was what one made of it. at the end of the day, blood didn’t always matter and certainly not in her case. “nahh, your laugh sounds more like janice from friends,” rose teased, reaching over and nudging him playfully. “just as grating and obnoxious, but somehow lovable.”

cal was not someone that rose normally would have chosen to hang out with. she was very much a free spirit and didn’t give a damn what people thought of her. cal... was the complete opposite. he had initially struck her as pretentious, smug, judgemental... and she’d been right. he could be all of those things, but he seemed to not be that way with her. he didn’t judge her and she didn’t completely despise him the way she’d initially thought she would. in fact... she liked him. a lot in fact. her brow furrowed as she glanced over at him in surprise. “alright, that’s enough alcohol for you,” she laughed, pulling the drink from cal’s hand. if any one of at least half of her friends had said that, she wouldn’t have batted an eye. cal? she never would have thought she’d hear those words out of his mouth. he was much too refined. “and to answer your question, never. sorry, this is halloween and she’s the final girl, so she doesn’t drink, have sex or do drugs in this movie.”

rose had a good life here. here, she was free now that she was half a world away from her parents and the boy they’d wanted her to marry. she had a great job that she loved and a newfound family made up of her close friends. and she had... cal. whatever that was. they were friends, she supposed, maybe a little more than that. she knew he wanted more than that, but she wasn’t sure. she was happy with what they had right now. no strings, just friends, just fun, no commitments. one day in the future? who knew? maybe that would change when her life wasn’t so busy. she felt like she was constantly on the go, but she liked it that way. in fact, she’d been on her way to work when someone approached her as she was waiting for her coffee. “i’m not scared, i’m annoyed.” she said, “you somehow know my name, you claim we know each other, yet i have no recollection of knowing you. you sure you have the right rose?”

☔ – a kiss in the rain

since when did it rain this much in los angeles in the summertime? well, rose couldn’t entirely complain, it was quite a nice surprise when she was at home inside with her paints and a cup of hot tea. when she was out and about however when she and cal had planned a picnic on the beach? not so much. it wasn’t even just a drizzle, it was a full on downpour that soaked through to the skin within seconds. she cursed when it started coming down and rushed to pack up their lunch and other belongings. she managed to get most of them before he was pulling her up to his level and he was pressing his lips to hers. they’d been engaged once, she and cal had kissed before, of course. not often, and very briefly considering they had been constantly chaperoned throughout their courtship, as was the norm in their time. this kiss... was nothing like the ones they’d shared all those years ago. back then, rose hadn’t felt anything. now... everything was different. she kissed him back, her hands coming up to his neck, leaning into him for warmth and a need to be as close as possible to him. she pulled back to take in a breath, leaning up to kiss him again once more before leaning back to let her gaze take in his features, her hand moving up to cup his cheek. “hey you know, i um... think i might be ready to open my heart for you like you wanted me to all those years ago.”

“I’m not jealous, but, like, come on, movie night is just for me and you only.”

“well first of all, i know that’s a lie. you’re an extremely jealous person and i can clearly see you’re jealous right now.” it wasn’t so much accusatory as much as a general statement. yes, cal was different, but rose would have been an idiot to not believe that he couldn’t still be jealous and possessive. she caught a glimpse of it when she mentioned that a male friend had been the first to teach her how to fly a plane. it wasn’t anything to worry about... yet. jealousy was actually healthy to a degree... in a relationship. which they weren’t in, but... they were on their way. “second of all, would it make you feel better to know that the only guy in this small group i’m having over tonight is very much in love with his boyfriend?”

🤗 Pull my muse into a hug

when they’d been engaged, cal hadn’t exactly been affectionate towards her. in part, because of the times they’d lived and in part... because she had admittedly pushed away the few attempts he’d made to get closer to her. not to mention, she’d always assumed that was just the way he was. he’d hugged her a few days ago as she’d finally told him about jack being mia... and now, he was greeting her with another hug. it was... weird, but... good weird as she hugged him back. “hey, so um... i kind of planned something today for you and i. well, i guess... technically two somethings, since i made a backup plan in case your answer to a couple of questions isn’t... favourable towards the first idea. first of all...  how afraid are you of flying? and two... how much do you trust me?”

“it sounds like it, not the most insane story i’ve heard around here though,” unlike john, rose didn’t see her adoptive mother very often. in fact when all of them had regained their memories, she and regina had kind of drifted apart for awhile. rose understood because regina was the mayor and had people to find. rose... all of her loved ones had become as much here. she had john and his family, she had her own career and... for a time she’d had jack, she’d been busy herself. even if they didn’t see each other much, regina was still a far better mother than her birth mother had ever been. “well, i’m happy for you. i’m glad you’ve found your son and that you’ve found... love...” she shot her a teasing smile. “assuming that’s what you and emma have? or is it still too early to tell yet?”
