Fairplay by Soul II Soul featuring Rose Windross
Directed by ???
PLAY FAIR: I'm slightly surprised that I haven't posted any Soul II Soul tracks on my page yet. That's pretty odd, considering that I have been listening to their music a lot recently, although my discovery of 'Back To Life' goes back to years ago. Taken from the seminal 'Club Classics Vol. One' album, released in 1989, 'Fairplay' is a brilliant mid-tempo featuring Rose Windross on vocals. A track which features brilliant lyrical snippets such as 'if you don't love me would it be fair, use my love and give yours to another, wouldn't that be fair?' and is set atop subtle keyboard chords and finger snaps, its mellow yet relentless groove gives the track's pensive and slightly hopeless narrative a more upbeat tone.
You just don't find music geared to the club and the head nowadays. 'Fairplay' is an example of how clever, beautifully produced music can work for both nightlife and individual listening sessions. No wonder why Jazzie B. and Nellee Hooper, the two masterminds behind Soul II Soul are still revered to this day. This is just one of the many brilliant tracks from this iconic British collective.
