U2's 8th studio album was released on 22 November 2004.

After spending 9 months recording with producer Chris Thomas, the band was unhappy with the results and brought in producer Steve Lillywhite (who had worked with U2 on their first 3 albums), who oversaw the next 6 months of recording (with additional production from Brian Eno, Carl Glanville, Nellee Hooper, Daniel Lanois, Jacknife Lee, and others).

Bono described How to Dismantle an Atomic Band as the group's "first rock album," and it was a commercial and critical success, topping the charts in 34 countries and selling almost 1 million copies in its first week of release. The album would go on to receive 8 Grammy Awards (including Best Rock Album and Album of the Year) and sell more than 10 million copies.
