Rosebird Parents - How Ruby takes after Raven...
For quite a while at this point, there’s been a fair bit of discussion on how Yang actually takes a lot after Summer, with some claims having posited that she takes even MORE after Summer than even Ruby does, or that she’s more alike to Summer than she is to Raven.
And while I think those particular claims have always been a bit overblown (and sometimes REALLY reek of fandom favoritism or scapegoating), I do think the underlying idea is very much on point:
That Yang is MUCH more alike to Summer Rose than the story first makes apparent. And that Yang probably takes after Summer just as much as Ruby does, and just as much as she takes after Raven.
I mean, even the show itself has started dropping a few major hints to this effect, most notably how Ruby’s Tree Vision in Volume 9 we see both Summer AND Raven displaying clear nods to Yang’s body language. A pretty clear visual indicator that Yang is meant to take after BOTH of them, likely in equal measure.
So all this got me thinking; if Yang actually takes just as much after Summer as does to Raven…
Might the reverse be true of RUBY as well?
I mean, Ruby already takes a fair bit after Raven in rather CURIOUS ways, namely her entire color scheme. Could she have a few more similarities in terms of personality and character as well?
Well, as a matter of fact; I think Ruby DOES.
For example; Raven is actually quite the effective trickster and manipulator as we see in Volumes 4 and 5. Just consider how Raven managed to fool everyone, Cinder, Watts, Leonardo, even Qrow, into thinking that Vernal was the Spring Maiden. With NO ONE, again not even her own BROTHER, having even the slightest inkling that RAVEN was the actual Maiden all along.
Then of course we have just how completely Raven played Cinder like a cheap kazoo in Volume 5. Raven knew exactly what Cinder wanted and just dangled it right in her face to get exactly what SHE wanted. To the point that Cinder had no idea that Raven was undermining all her plans all in preparation to stab her in the back.
And I can’t help but think this all feels VERY similar to what we’ve seen of Ruby in how she’s gradually become much more of a ruthless trickster and manipulator to her own enemies like Neo, Cordo, Harriet, Ironwood and more.
I feel like most people, myself included, have long assumed that Ruby just got all this from Summer. That Summer simply had her own ruthless trickster side just like Ruby.
But what if that ISN’T actually the case?
I’ve discussed previously the idea that Team STRQ was actually a much more ‘standard’, tropey, archetypal, ‘played straight’ group of fantasy adventure protagonists. In contrast to just how subversive, deconstructionist, archetype-breaking and trope-busting Team RWBY are.
So what if Summer really was a much more conventional bright, optimistic, kind (though perhaps a bit of a trickster) and heroic protagonist, and it was Raven who was had the major ruthless tendencies as a likewise more conventional dark anti-hero?
We do actually have a bit of evidence for this, most notably in the at-least-semi-canon DC comics where Summer is described as sometimes being ‘too kind for her own good’, leading to her being manipulated or taken advantage of, and Raven being the one to bail her out.
And you know, if you think about bringing together the pair of a traditional kind, optimistic heroine and her dark, brooding and ruthless anti-hero partner…
I feel like that rather perfectly describes RUBY.
for rosebird week day 7: fall from grace!!
Commissioned: Rosebird Queen and Knight by @keicrocker
Hello all, this is a piece I commissioned for Rosebird Queen and Knight by the excellent @keicrocker!
I asked them to lean on Bronze Age style armor and clothing designs and I am enamored with the result!
Image Description: Summer in crimson armor with a white cape holding Raven's hand and smiling confident as she kisses it. Raven is on the right side in a black and red lines dress-shawl with long ear rings and smiling back at Summer.
