“I’m just… Milo.”
Today’s spotlight is on Rose Bousamra’s Gutless.

Gutless by Rose Bousamra (@roseiaghost) is the story of a genderless mechanical knight that is bought to life by a witch princess. The world is described as “a magical manifestation of North America, called the Realm of the Seven Stars.” The mechanical knight, Milo, must navigate both their own identity and also their understanding of this strange world of which they have become part.
There are only 26 pages to Gutless, but already there is a rich, intricate world being created by Rose Bousamra. The characters are so expressive; their actions and facial features are endearing and individual – especially how Milo tries to shrink while talking to the mermaid.
What is most intriguing and important about Gutless is Milo’s struggle to define their identity, to understand a world that isn’t prepared for their existence, and to find a place where they feel at home. Milo’s quest, while fantastical and full of secrets, is both relatable and representative of the struggle to be oneself. Whether in a fantasy world, or in our world, the greatest challenge is often to be fully yourself, even when that can be not only emotionally taxing but also dangerous. Rose’s comic is important for how it highlights the connections between how we relate to ourselves and others, and how we navigate a world that is both home and foreign to us.
We can’t wait to follow Milo’s journey and see where Milo, Tesla, and Ophie end up.
