However, during the trip, her plans are derailed when a terrible storm blows in and causes their ship to wreck.
During the chaos, Victor is thrown overboard and finds himself struggling to keep his head above water. Miraculously, Victor is saved by a handsome, mysterious mermaid who quickly vanishes back into the salty waters without even a goodbye.

It is rumbling thunder outside when Victor hears him, clear from across the palace grounds as though his voice was in Victor’s very ear.
It’s dark.
Indeed it is. The night is settling over them, well past the trees already; the twilight hour is waning, and a storm is brewing, sending all the forest inhabitants into a state of unrest.
But none more so than his precious Yuuri.
Since Victor cannot respond, he puts away his maps and logs—a bit hurriedly, though he makes sure they at least make it into their proper places—and leaves the study, footfalls coming in quick succession, though he doesn’t quite break out into a run. It is improper—apparently—and while Victor doesn’t care for the archaic propriety laws that designate that, he does care a bit more if his elven brethren take in his haste and misconstrue it for something far more serious than the night descending on them.
Still, when he breaches his and Yuuri’s private chambers, he finds himself falling into a sprint all the same.
“Yuuri?” he calls, when he doesn’t find his beloved where he had left him.
Here, Yuuri says, and there’s a knock on the wardrobe, faint but sure.
Victor waits until the first strike of lightning has drained from the room to open the cupboard. At the lull, he opens the door to find his poor love wound in the corner. At the sight of Victor, he immediately reaches out, and Victor welcomes him into his arms.
“It’s so loud,” is all Yuuri says, clutching onto Victor for what feels to be dear life.
“I know,” Victor lies. He does not. His gift is not anywhere on the spectrum of Yuuri’s, as his own favors the elements. But he knows what Yuuri has told him, and from the description, it sounds to be a terribly overwhelming thing. He draws Yuuri back from his shoulder—just to get a look at him, at how his eyes flicker from its typical honeyed-brown to a near red each time the thoughts of others intrude on his mind. “Is it the animals?” Victor asks, brushing back Yuuri’s hair, feather-light.
Yuuri nods, teary-eyed. “They—they’re so scared of the weather, and we have to do something, Vitya. We have to—“
“We have, my darling.” Victor continues his ministrations, tracing along the part of Yuuri’s hair. “They’re all stowed away and safe. The dogs are inside. We’ve done all we can, tonight.”
As he says this, another strike of lightning descends behind them, shaking the very earth. Victor winces as he hears the horses’ distressed whinnying from beyond the window—then once more, when Yuuri’s eyes flicker again; Yuuri clutches his head with the force of it, which Victor covers with his own hands, applying a light pressure.
“I keep telling them,” Yuuri nearly sobs, “that it can’t hurt them if they remain inside. But they don’t listen to me.”
“It is admirable that you try,” Victor says, and he means it. “But you may not be able to convince them of this, now or ever. As much as we love them, horses and dogs aren’t capable of the reasoning we elves are.”
Inexplicably, a smile twitches at Yuuri’s lips. “I was able to get through to the children though. So my suffering is not in vain.”
Yes, the children. Elves, who live so long it might as well be forever, have them so very rarely. But there are two in the woodland realm currently, which the entire community collectively dotes on. “I am glad to hear that,” Victor praises, his tone exonerating. “See, my love? You’ve done so much good this day.”
“But they—they keep crying—“
Victor hushes him, holds him close. It’s a rare thing: this vulnerable Yuuri. Usually his gift is like any other’s: able to be controlled at will, only used in the cases of negotiation or combat or—Yuuri’s specialty—espionage. But when the thoughts are so similar, so consistent—so constant—they latch, desperately, onto the one person who can hear their pleas. In such cases, Yuuri’s power runs wild, unable to be silenced.
Well, if such is the case that it must be engaged no matter what—
Victor tilts Yuuri’s chin up. “I want you to read me, darling. Only me. Can you do that?”
His irises burn bright behind the tears—with thoughts but also with sheer determination. “Okay, Vitya.” His eyes go from an intermittent flashing to entirely ablaze, singularly focused as he is on Victor, the floodgates of his beloved’s consciousness unfolding to him.
I love you, darling. Yes, that’s it. You don’t have to suffer anymore this night. Just focus on my love for you. I could go on for days for you—about your beauty, about your strength, your intelligence. Yes, there you go. Don’t fight it. I’ll be right here to catch you, love, so focus only on me.
Yuuri sways, the toll of using his powers to their full extent an expensive one indeed. He is completely bled out of vitality within the moment, slumping into Victor’s open arms; his eyes go mercifully dark as his head falls into Victor’s shoulder, finally having been drained of the energy necessary to access his higher faculties.
“All quiet now,” Victor whispers, his fingers carding through Yuuri’s locks. “Let’s get you to bed.”
He lifts Yuuri, an arm around the shoulders and under the crux of the knees. Yuuri cannot respond—in Victor’s mind or otherwise—but finds the strength to trace a heart below Victor’s collarbone, pressing a kiss there.
“I love you too,” Victor answers the silent gesture, when he has Yuuri and himself tucked under a plethora of blankets.
Yuuri drifts off to Victor’s sweet nothings, continued aloud as though the connection never ended.
What's your favourite things about gaalee? Or even just the characters on their own?
oh gosh. oh boy this is.... a big question.
like there’s so much that i love about this pairing and these two specific characters. i don’t even know where to begin.
i love how they balance each other so well. i love that Lee’s optimism is like sunshine bursting through the clouds on a rainy day, and that gaara’s idealism is never less just because he’s also a realist. I love that gaara is grounded and that he can give Lee quiet moments, peaceful moments. i love that lee can excite and surprise gaara, can show him what it means to be spontaneous, can show him how to feel unrestrained joy. i love that lee is so unwaveringly honest, so good, so true, so devoted and that gaara who never had someone like that, someone who so devoted to him and only him, someone who looked at him and saw the world--i love that lee can be that. lee who doesn’t give less than 110% to anything he does including loving gaara. i love that gaara who is so faithful can be the one to love lee because lee has always needed someone else to have faith in himself to show him how to have faith in himself. i love that they show each other how to experience those parts of themselves they didn’t know existed, maybe didn’t exist before the other.
i love that they enrich each other’s lives so fully, so completely. it’s not that they weren’t whole without the other, it’s just that they are more with the other. more brave, more kind, more soft, more joyful, more quiet, more adventurous, more fulfilled.
gaara had so much unhappiness in his life as a child--12 long years of unhappiness, loneliness, confusion, pain... and now he gets to have a lifetime with this person who loves him so completely he feels like he might burst. that pain in his heart is forgotten whenever Lee smiles at him. and on the bad nights, when he remembers and feels so lonely, Lee is there to remind him that he’s not. to remind him that he’s alive, that he deserves to be alive and loved and happy
and lee who was ridiculed and unimpressive, who was less than the other children, who spent his own childhood an outcast of a different kind... now he has someone who sees him as something extraordinary, something special, something splendid. he has the love of a great man who thinks he’s even greater even though that can’t possibly be true because Gaara is the Kazekage, he is so strong and so compassionate and Lee loves him so much. but whenever gaara looks at him, he can see it shining in those eyes like jade and it makes Lee feel like he could fly.
their love is so pure, so whole, so beautiful and shining.
i just don’t understand how anyone couldn’t love these two together tbh
Jingle bells! (I am living for matchmaker yuuri and victor like omg)
Ahh, thank youu! I mean, they’ve been wingmanned so many times, so it was about time they tried wingmanning themselves – though the jury’s still out on how well that’s going for them 😂
After the dinner section concludes, the tables are cleared and a small brass band is brought in for the dancing. “How does one family be so extra just for one party?” Yuuri wonders as he and Phichit watch people start to dance. Viktor has been commandeered by some of the younger cousins, while Christophe tends to recording donations at a table next to a small Christmas tree in the corner.
“You’d be surprised,” says Phichit. “My family reunions can get this extra, too.”
“I know Viktor’s family is also ridiculous,” mutters Yuuri. “And I heard Leo’s are Disney nuts. I feel like maybe I’m the only skater in this generation to have a normal family.”
“Guang-Hong’s parents are normal,” says Phichit, his expression amused. “He worked out his scholarship and sponsorships himself. I suppose it helps that his family has connections in Harbin so he can go up and use their facilities, but –”
“Okay, but. Innkeepers who know nothing about figure skating.”
“Point.” Phichit laughs. “But that makes you special, doesn’t it? Means every achievement you earn came as the result of hard work, instead of hard work with a dose of money and connections.”
Yuuri sighs, watching Viktor circle past with a giggling little girl in his arms. “Doesn’t really help the feeling that I’m intruding on a world where I have no place.”
“You took the gold in the last GPF,” Phichit points out. “You belong here.”
They subside into a comfortable silence then, watching the party carry on. The song ends, but Christophe still doesn’t budge from the donations, and one of his cousins is making his way over.
“Do you want to dance?” Yuuri asks suddenly, causing Phichit to blink at him.
“I thought you had to be peeled off the wall like the wallflower you are,” he remarks.
“Well, it’s me, or Chris’s cousin.” Yuuri nods in his direction. Phichit considers it, and then takes Yuuri’s hand.
And if Yuuri tries to steer him closer to Christophe’s corner, well, that’s mostly just his business.
