Chapter 7: Who Will Lead?

I still got three WIPs going, but they're actually moving again, so that's something! 🎉

One is almost done (I think. Getting a second opinion) and one needs a lot of work, so here is a sample from the one that is juuuuuust right.

Welcome to chapter 8 of I'm Sorry I Ruined Your Party (affectionately nicknamed SIRYP) my POV rotating fever dream currently set during the end of Dragon Age 2, Act 2. This chapter is from Seb's POV.

The streets were deserted, even the roguish thugs which normally stalked their shadows having been banished by the Qunari threat. Some would have called the silence unnerving, Sebastian found it calming. It provided the perfect atmosphere for contemplation over the days events. He prayed as he walked, thanking the Maker and Andraste for end of the conflict and for keeping his compatriots safe. He knew what the others would say: it was their prowess and strength which had done that, not the Maker or his bride. Sebastian knew better, for it was the Maker who had granted them those qualities which had allowed for success. It was also by the Maker's grace that the elvhen woman had appeared, Andraste's ever reaching mercy directing her blade to save the people of Kirkwall from the Qun's oppression. Himself included. Had it not been for her quick disposal of the despot, the house of the Maker would likely have been an early target of his tyranny, leaving the populous without respite and himself without a home.

He had never properly thanked her, he realized shamefully. A glaring oversight on his part, but one that luckily he might be able to correct. 

Sebastian changed direction, turning towards Lowtown. Hawke had invited the young woman to accompany him and the others to the Hanged Man. He couldn't be sure she had accepted, but he suspected she would have. Even if she hadn't, however, the group may have an idea where she could be found. It was his best chance in any case.

The serene quiet faded as he approached Lowtown, for the lower reaches of the city never truly slept, but even this part of the city had been muted by the chaos. Doorways and filthy alcoves which normally housed urchins and beggars were vacant, their usual residents seeking shelter at the Chantry Darktown. Their absence hastened Sebastian's journey, as it was his custom to stop and offer aid to those he encountered, and he reached the Hanged Man in only a few minutes walking. Even from the street it was clear that the threat of annihilation had not dulled the rowdy nature of the bar's occupants, in fact upon pulling the door open Sebastian was met with a wall of bodies which he had to force his way through even to gain entrance.

The denizens of Lowtown had apparently developed their own method for seeking comfort in dark times.

Chapter 9 - As True as You're Going to Get

The day after the Qunari attack had been quiet in the Keep, a chance to get things cleaned up and to attempt to begin the arduous process of getting the dead man's affairs in order. Bran had foolishly hoped the calm would last, if only a week. Nobles had their own homes to deal with and besides, it would be assumed that the seneschal would need time to mourn the man who had presumably been his friend, would he not?

Bran let his head thump once against the hard oak of the door, penance for his foolishness.

Of course not. At dawn the very next day, like vultures, the nobles had descended, no thought in their minuscule minds but their own advancement and, knowingly or not, Bran's suffering. The onslaught had continued, unabated, since then. He turned all of them away, much as he had done before Marlowe's death, but the insistence with which they reappeared was reminiscent of rats flocking to a garbage heap. It would begin again come morning, he knew, and Bran let his head thump against the door again in something like despair.

"You're going to give yourself a nasty bruise," a slight, feminine voice informed him. "Not the best look for when the nobles come nipping at your heels."

With a start, Bran turned on his heel—recent events making him more jumpy and suspicious than usual—and stared at the elven woman standing before him in the fore chamber.

"Unless that was what you were going for," she continued thoughtfully, crossing her arms. "If you're hoping for some sympathy, a black eye would work better. I can help with that if you'd like."

Forehead creasing into a severe frown, Bran scowled. "Is that a threat?"

She shrugged, flipping her hair back from her face with a tilt of her head. "Just an offer."

"You're her, aren't you?" Bran asked, realization dawning. He hadn't recognized her at first, the long days wearing on his mind and memory, but it was definitely her.

"I'm Nobody," she replied, the statement sounding more like an introduction than a denial.

Book Discussion Challenge Day 9 Rotating POV

POV is a funny thing. Such strong feelings evoked.

The novel series I’m writing is in first person present tense, and I’ve had quite a few people tell me that I should probably change that because ‘some people won’t read first person.’

That’s a very strange comment to make for starters. No matter what I write, there’s always going to be some people who don’t like YA, science fiction, female leads, romantic subplots, this sort of science fiction (no space ships or gun battles) etc etc.

If I tried to write to please all those nebulous ‘some people’ I’d never write a word.

But back to the topic.

See the thing is, I can’t just switch the POV I’m writing in. It comes out the way it comes out. The story tells me what it needs to be.

So I was surprised to even be told that changing the POV on a story that was already written or even in the process of being written was a thing that was considered possible.

Another moment of learning that not everyone writes like I do. (Even though I know that everyone totally should, because my way is obviously the best way.)

But it took reading a popular book series with alternating first person POV to truly get the point behind the first v’s third battle.

You see I also believed myself to be one of those people who hates first person. I remember moaning to my writing group friends when Guardian start coming out in first. How could I do this to myself? Why was I writing in such a horrible POV?

What I actually hate is first person done poorly. I think that’s what most people mean when they say they hate it. (Small brag: Quite a few conversations about my books have started with ‘I usually hate first person but I like this.’)

Objectively I consider first person the more difficult POV to write. Which makes rotating first person the most difficult of all. It’s hard enough to climb inside your character's skin and fully commit to viewing the story through their eyes alone. To do that with more than one character, to own each ones individual voice and differing feelings and motivation requires an amazing level of skill.

Reading the aforementioned popular series I found myself enjoying the story, but at the same time annoyed. I put on my writer hat and analyzed what exactly was bugging me. Once I noted the moments that were bothering me it all came clear. The writer kept viewing her characters externally, and giving the two characters the same thought patterns. It was blindingly clear that this story should’ve been written in third person. Maybe it was originally written that way and the author took some well meaning but poor advice to switch it to first because that was how all the hot YA was done or something.

My point is...I don’t know exactly. Perhaps it’s that when most people say they hate a certain writing style it really means they hate it done poorly. And to take all advice on our writing and filter it before even considering applying it.
