The dull tip of the blade pressed closely, ghosting the flesh of Constance’s neck. Edelgard was a force to be reckoned with. With her partner cornered, pressed against the wall, she simply smiled before speaking,  “ it is. You see… you excel in combat at a distance yet… you are clearly lacking abilities in close range combat. ”

There was a certain intensity that burned within her eyes. Perhaps putting Constance on edge brewed some sort of satisfaction within the emperor – silver haired maiden watched, pondering how to proceed from this point forward.  “ Now, Constance, how would you undo yourself from this deadlock? ”

Slowly, the sword pressed closer but not close enough to touch the other woman’s skin. There was a meaning to taunt, as if Edelgard lived off of the thrill of frustrating the blonde woman that she had backed into a corner.  

“Well, if they get close there’s hardly a point. Clearly I have already failed.” Constance snapped, glad they’d decided to do this inside. She grew a little nervous as the emperor grew closer, finding her lips parting slightly. The blade was just barely away from her skin, enough that Constance could have sworn she could feel the hairs on her neck brushing up against it. Hardly anything more than a romantic notion, surely. 

“How would I, indeed...” She said, breathlessly. Her lips were only parted for a moment more before thinning into a scowl, not that it stopped her from leaning forwards slightly as an idea came to mind. For a moment, she stared into Edelgard’s eyes, marveling at them, only then for the idea she was thinking of to reach fruition. 

What would Balthus do?

Constance took a deep breath, then pulled her head back slightly - before ramming her forehead into Edelgard’s own as fast as she could. While she succeeded in knocking the emperor away from her, the woman almost immediately regretted the decision as she collapsed to her knees, clutching her bleeding forehead and and groaning. 

“B-blasted...gah, the last time I use that plan...”

dorothea purposely beelines for edelgard so she can “accidentally” bump her emperor into a wall and kiss her

It wasn’t as if Petra didn’t ruminate on such serious matters as she was doing now. She simply often felt little need to voice them, as they often did not plague her enough to feel as though she should make such things known. However, with the unveiling of a plot that had been waiting to be set in motion, and the escalation of a conflict which was soon about to reach its breaking point...not having much else to do but prepare for the battle looming on the horizon gave Brigid’s royalty present among their company quite a lot of time to consider what had taken place and the situation they were placed in right now. Even now, Petra had never second-guessed her choice, and she found comfort in the fact that most of her classmates, like her, had chosen to follow this path when the seemingly inevitable divide (at least in retrospect) had occurred.

If anyone paid close enough attention to Petra, her uncharacteristically vacant stare combined with folded arms and the occasional muttering of something in her native tongue, followed by her shaking her head and closing her lips as soon as the realization that there were audible sounds from her struck her...they all gave away that something was clearly amiss. It wasn’t unreasonable to expect that one would spend so much time simply thinking about all that had come to pass, when the point of no return was so sudden, leaving little time to do much aside from act on instincts and what their hearts told them in the moment. Yet a thought had been brewing under the surface for Petra Macneary, one that could be ignored no longer. She felt her stomach turn simply over the idea of bringing these things to Edelgard. There was every chance that simply expressing such concerns would have the newly-appointed Adrestian Emperor wish to have nothing more to do with Brigid or its political hostage. Petra did not truly view herself as such, anymore, of course. 

To say there was hesitation in her mind and that her steps toward Edelgard were unsteady were to grossly understate the matter.

“Edelgard...may I be speaking to you with privacy-...I mean, in private?” Even her voice was unsteady, revealing some of the mental cracks that had formed. “I am...having questions I am needing to be asking you now that we are having made our choices after many things were revealing-...revealed. If you are not wanting to be talking to me now, I will have understanding, and if Hubert is feeling a need to be watching us carefully or even to be hearing all the things we are saying while we are having talking-...I mean, are talking...I will not be...taking great offense with that. I am having certainty that he is concerning-...concerned with your safety more now than any time before.”

The heir to Brigid was even having to correct herself much more than she usually did, as though she had actually regressed in her knowledge of Fodlan’s language. Perhaps Edelgard would be able to discern what was occupying most of her mind, and the potential of that only brought more anxiety to Petra. Even so, she knew that just as the woman she had come to idolize and who saw nothing but grief in the world had great bravery in taking the steps necessary to change the way the world was, she, too, needed to possess that resolve to make her voice heard and her concerns known. It was important, as well, that there was full honesty between the two of them, and as so many truths were coming to light, it only made sense to Petra that Edelgard had that full honesty out of her.

009. a thank you letter 

My Dearest Edelgard,

Merely by writing those three words I have likely already given poor Hubert a fit. Of course, whether it is due to the lack of decorum or the implication of intimacy I am unclear - but may this serve as a warning to him in the future to stop reading all of your correspondence. I know he does it and you must surely also be aware, it’s his job after all, yet I feel as if sometimes he does overstep his bounds.

Still, I must thank you for your continued patronage. I assure you I will return to the capital with most haste once my work in Abyss is completed, yet I cannot in good conscience allow those constructs we once encountered to remain active and likely to attack those who go exploring. Your steady stream of funds, supplies and soldiers has proven most helpful in this task, no matter your motivations for sending them - be they of pure altruism and hope for the people who still continue to reside here by choice, or out of attachment to me. Likely I consider it a combination of the two, if I may be so bold.

Rest assured that once my task here is done I will return to your side with all haste. I just hope that in the moment of my absence no other upstart house dares to try and claim the space that House Nuvelle rightfully deserves - while I trust your word, other nobles can be like spiders or worse when it comes to attempting to dispose of others. I swear upon my own name that even in your new society none will usurp the von Nuvelle name or reputation in either accomplishment or loyalty.

I miss you, Edelgard.

and so she has it: sweat slick, blooming with hunger, hands desperate on edelgard’s hips. there is blood dripping down her face and dorothea is exhausted. she is a woman reduced to bones and want, open mouthed in her longing, sucking on edelgard’s lower lip, tasting her own blood on her tongue. she’s messy with it, this kiss, and trembling from the ache of it. her hands can’t decide if they want to stay on edelgard’s hips or her stomach or shoulders or face, slipping against the folded eagle wings, drowning in that hair. 

she’s a wreck and she doesn’t care, because the fighting is done and they are both still standing and dorothea wants only to kiss her beloved. not her emperor, her villain, her wayward savior  –––  just her, with eyes too big for her face and a mouth that burns more than any fire. a mouth she takes to kissing raw and sunrise ripe, again and again and again, until she can’t, until all dorothea can do is pant against her lip, heart inside out, whispering edie, edie, we did it, edie  ...
