Rinderrouladen wie bei Oma — beef rolls, a traditional German Sunday dish.
Thick slices of beef, bacon, pickles, and a tasty mustard sauce make up the classic and hearty German dish Rouladen. It's a hearty and filling meal that's great for special occasions or a cozy family dinner.
Ingredients: 4 thin slices of beef about 1/4 inch thick. 4 slices of bacon. 4 medium-sized dill pickles. 1 medium-sized onion, finely chopped. 4 tablespoons Dijon mustard. Salt and pepper to taste. 4 toothpicks. 2 tablespoons vegetable oil. 1 cup beef broth. 1/2 cup red wine. 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour.
Instructions: Lay out the beef slices on a clean surface. Spread 1 tablespoon of Dijon mustard on each beef slice. Place a slice of bacon on top of each beef slice. Add a dill pickle and a sprinkle of finely chopped onions on top of the bacon. Roll up each beef slice tightly, securing with a toothpick. Season the rouladen with salt and pepper. Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Brown the rouladen on all sides until they are nicely seared. Remove the rouladen from the skillet and set them aside. In the same skillet, add the flour and cook for a minute until it becomes slightly browned. Pour in the red wine and beef broth, stirring constantly to make a smooth gravy. Return the rouladen to the skillet, cover, and simmer for about 1.5 to 2 hours, or until the beef is tender. Occasionally turn the rouladen and baste them with the gravy. Once done, remove the toothpicks and serve the rouladen with the delicious gravy. Enjoy your authentic German Rouladen!
