Infographic - "Selecting a Round-bale Feeder
Horses should eat 1.5% to 2.5% of their body weight daily.
No feeder (roundbale is pictured on the ground) - Horses at 1.3% of their body weight. 57% hay waste (Inedible) Excessive hay waste contributed to low intake and body weight loss. We recommend always using a feeder when feeding round bales.
Circular Feeders (roundbale is pictured in a round bin with an open top) - Feeders paid for themselves in 1 to 4.5 months. Horses ate 2.1% to 2.4% of their body weight. 13 to 19% hay waste.
Other Feeder Designs (roundbale is in a bin with bars that extend upward and a cap or roof over it) - Horses are 2 to 2.3% of their bodyweight. 5 to 33% waste. Feeders paid for themselves in 2 to 10 months.
Hay Nets (roundbale is shown inside a net that is also inside of a feeder of indescriminate design) - Place nets inside another feeder so horses can't stand on them as they eat hay or when they are wearing halters, blankets, or shoes. Nets paid for themselves in less than one month. Horses ate 2.4% of their body weight. 6% hay waste.
