Kim Grice was having a routine procedure done at an outpatient surgery center in Florida, when something went horribly wrong:
A flash fire erupted onto her face, leaving her face and neck damaged. She was transferred to a burn center in Alabama, but the fire had already gone out. She is now in stable condition.
The true cause of the fire is under investigation. Usually, surgical fires are caused by a combination of heat and alcohol, but can be put out quickly. Grice's mother, who was waiting for her daughter in the outpatient center, says she wants answers.
She told the Crestview News Bulletin, “I am in shock. This is not what happens with a routine outpatient surgery,” she said. “She had headaches and the doctor was going to remove three cysts and biopsy them but something went bad wrong and my daughter is now in a burn unit with burn specialists and I still do not know what happened. No one will tell me why or how this happened to her.”
