for you, i will revive redacted!rowan, and talk a little bit about one of my old fics

wolf out of water was my technically fourth redacted fic; not all of the early ones got published. i wrote it in the study vc in the redacted server, back in the day, and spent a lot of that time instead of writing looking at photos of abandoned theme parks for what ended up being like, one and a half paragraphs of exposition at the beginning. as you do.

but it is really fascinating :') i found the picture i remember using, which is of six flags new orleans (abandoned after katrina in the 2000s)

(from this article - it appears six flags nola might actually be starting to get redeveloped this year? i checked and they had a plan approved :0!)

i still dont Get why lovely would do what they do (not at night at least, eesh) but there is a sort of fascination to looking at empty places that are meant to have so many people in them, you know, and the leftover bits of rides look like these giant metal skeletons. it's very cool

anyway wolf out of water is about darlin' talking to william, and i'm not very caught up or anything but i'm fairly certain this is an interaction we still haven't had (you can correct me if i'm wrong!) and so i still like what i did for them. i like darlin caught between authority issues and trying to be nice to sam's maker, and i like the sort of post-tragedy exhausted vibe that this fic (& mind in the moment) seem to have

so. so so so so so so so

the character dynamics of this chapter of oe are so fun for me you have no idea. incoming samdavid(ivy) meta?? is this meta??? idk

samdavid is So Good ive had a long time to think about it and i just love what they have going on. sam is stiff and formal/polite around david bc he‘s an authority figure, kind of the same way he says there‘s a barrier there with William, right

but like. they go through inversion together and that busts some of that down, it just has to. and so thats the way we get to this chapter’s sort of... nervous/confident dichotomy bc when sam forgets who david is they have a rapport built on connection from their shared trauma and just, like, general respect as people that they have in canon already. then also, david and ivy are similar people, sam knows the way to treat a) a tsundere werewolf and b) a magic student, so he can easily slip into a role to match that

on the other hand since becoming alpha david is unused to contesting with .... idk not an authority figure, sam doesnt have power over him, but like someone a bit older than him (? vibes only ofc but i do think sam is) that he. respects and looks up to & has a personal relationship with. like ofc he respects angel but the Vibe is different, ok. you understand. and so his innermost desire to have sam call him a good boy kind of freaks him out LMAO

so the bit in the last part with ivy and david’s awkwardness is a character conflict thats going to be addressed later so im not going to get into it, thats spoilers, BUT... the contrast with david’s willingness to be like rudely affectionate with sam vs ivy here really is supposed to show davidsam getting closer.

david has like.... 4 modes to me. “i dont know you and i dont like you” = rude with no feeling ; “i know you and i don’t like you” = rude on purpose to hurt ; “i don’t know you but i like you / you're in a position (authority, vulnerability) that means i should be kind” = serious/professional respect ; and “i know and like you” = playful sarcasm and banter + serious respect / genuine vulnerability

by ascending to ‘david flips you off’ / ‘havent you heard of politeness mr shaw’ samdavid is going up a david affection level

- embarrassingly personally important to me. relationship growth moment. so many gentle and caring consent checks, made me feel warm and fuzzy and ughughuhggh gross on the inside. emotional vulnerability? disgusting.

5. hux’s confession

- b r i d g i n g !!!!! one of my favorite aspects of the rdv is music magic, and the descriptions in this…. chefs kiss. more than that its so important that that moment of healing is with hux who was the first to acknowledge what had been broken. safety & trust & LOVE!!!!!!! cool audio effects!!! kiss!!!! hux calling fl ‘dude’ after kissing them!!!! beloveds
