Johanna: Our characters form a shaky alliance.
Roxanne Stanton had to be the smallest Career Ashton had ever laid eyes on. The small, dark-haired girl from District 2 barely came up to her male counterparts chest, and they made the strangest pair riding side by side in their chariot. Before Ashton had climbed into his with the other girl from District 1, he'd noticed that they'd even given her a small step to stand on, so that she would be level with her partner.
Ashton watched her carefully, though, eyes narrowed as they followed her through the training room. Her partner, six feet five inches of pure muscle, was beheading things with a sword in the light room, and everybody was staring. But he had eyes for the lithe, pale girl making her way to a long table strewn with different plants and fruits. Her fingers hovered over them all as she walked the length of the table, picking up a leaf here, a handful of seed there. The instructor watched her with a strange look on his face, and Ashton made his way forward, hands in his pockets.
She crushed all of her well-chosen ingredients into a small bowl, draining some strange fruit of all of it's juices and forming a thick paste. She moved back to the other end of the table, and Ashton walked forward, tilting the bowl down with a finger and peering inside.
"I wouldn't touch that if I were you." So she was quiet too.
Pretending as though she hadn't just snuck up on him, he set the bowl down and looked at her over his shoulder. "What is it?" He asked curiously. She seemed to appraise him with her clear blue eyes, judging him before she answered.
"It's a poison. Ingest it and you'll be dead in a matter of minutes." Her voice was quiet, the smirk on her face deadly as she elbowed him out of her way.
"Is that your only skill?" He asked, a single brow raised. Careers didn't usually use poison. That was something he would have expected from one of the lower districts.
"Is your only skill hand to hand combat?" She asked in the same tone, not looking at him as she focused on her work. He smiled that cocky smile of his and shrugged. Ashton was good at hand to hand combat, but he preferred to work with knives. Of course his competition didn't need to know that just yet. He wasn't planning on making any alliances after all, but now -- he was thinking differently.
"Have you and your partner teamed up?" He asked, jerking his thumb over his should at the giant still slashing the air, sending bricks of orange light flying.
"Nope. He's all brawn, and I'm not in the business of aligning myself with idiots. I'll kill him before the first day is out, wait and see." Her eyes twinkled mischievously before she grabbed an apple and bit into it, finally turning to face Ashton fully. "Why? You want dibs on him? I'll admit, he's nice to look at. You should see him without a shirt on."
Ashton grinned at that and shook his head, looking her over again. Sure, she was small, but this close he could see that she had muscles, long and lean. And there was something in her stance that spoke strength.
"No, I actually had my eye on someone else," he answered, reaching forward and taking the apply from her fingers, taking a bite. "Look, I'm sure you can take care of yourself. But you're gonna need someone to watch your back while you make this shit. I'm sure it's all very precise and finding the ingredients isn't gonna be as easy as walking up to a table once we're there. Or, it might be. If they're smart, they'll leave you some of the stuff we might not find in the arena at the cornucopia. I watch your back, and you watch mine. We'll take the Career Pack down."
"And then what?" She asked, her head tilting to the side as she snatched the apple back from him. Her eyes were unreadable, cold, and he knew that no matter what alliance they made here, he wouldn't be able to trust her.
"I guess we'll just have to wait and see."
