RepostBy @questlove: "The #RoxanneChallenge. In Memory Of Hip Hop's 1st NERD #EMD (#EducatedRapper) from #UTFO ---I can never ever describe the phenomenon that was #RoxanneRoxanne when it came out in 84. Everything about it was brand spanking new: the tale of a woman who gets the last laugh on 3 dudes tryna kick game to her, spawned SO MANY answer recordings. Every week there was a new record from Roxanne's Doctor to multiple ladies claiming to be Roxanne. On a historical note. That verse I spit was the first hip hop verse to be recited over an actual drum break (#BigBeat by #BillySquire---note that #OwnerOfALonleyHeart by prog rockers Yes gave us the first break sample w #FunkInc's #KoolIsBack, & technically had @officialRunDMC released #HereWeGo in its recorded year of 83 they could claim this title but it was dropped in late 84 AFTER "Roxanne" used the break first. EMD was a personal hero to me because he made us nerds/dweebs/and occasionally uncool dudes feel like they had a place in hip hop culture. Always wanted to meet him & never got a chance to thank him for changing my life. #NERDsUNITE!" )
