God...”If I Can’t Love Her” is such a powerful song, I wish it was in every version of Beauty and the Beast. It shows the man behind the monster before the act of going and saving her from the wolves could.

He saw Belle do something as selfless take her father’s place as a prisoner, and he laments that there’s more monster than man because if he could be able to love anyone, it should be someone as beautiful, selfless, and brave as her.
“Careless and unthinking, I moved onward”
He knows that instead of trying to be better after being cursed, he just pushed on in his selfish ways, not bothering to accept that he needs to change. Now he’s realizing the consequences of those actions.

No point anymore, if I can't love her

Let the world be done with me.”
He sees that he’s pushing her away and if he wants to break the curse and save the last of his humanity, he has to learn how to love her and if he can’t, let him die, because he’d rather die trying as a man then live any longer as the beast he’s become.
This song shows such raw and painful emotion, it makes you sympathize with him so much earlier in the show, and it really shows what made him go after her and save her life. THEN you can see him trying to change and understand it’s not just like flipping a switch, it’s unlearning all his old, selfish behaviors and desperately trying to become better and learn to be human again.
