Roy Liechtenstein ‘Mono Museum’

When visiting the Moco Museum another piece I came across which I found interesting was the 3D installation room by Roy Lichenstein. The installation uses the pop-art style that Lichenstein is famous for through out the entire room, dots, flat colours and magnified halftones spread across the entire room creating a surreal experience when entering the exhibition. The room has a cartoon effect that seems as though your stepping into another dimension. This is very similar to the exhibition by Daniel Arsham in the sense that its a full 3D installation created with practical means. Personally I think the installation reflects the consumerist society we currently live in and I also feel as though it wants us to embrace the beauty within popular culture.

3rd Digital Colouring - 13/01/2017 Roy Lichenstein inspired pinup. Linework "Pinup" by Nikki LeDree

Nikki said that she would send me some linework to colour, and this was the first - A pinup with obvious eastern flavour.

The sun behind her and the oriental feel made me think of the Japanese Rising Sun Flag. This in turn, made me think of Roy Lichenstein’s paintings on Japan, specifically “Sunrise”. This inspired the sun rays and halftone background.

I have mixed feelings about this colouring. The 50s pinup feel is really evident in the hair, skin and top. Yet the pink shorts really pull from this visual and if I were to edit it would be denim to better fit the theme.

The tattoos are both favourite areas for me. With the background of the koi being visually complex and interesting, and the water lilies being impacted by the tights.

Sandwiches, Wraps and Rolls.

I selected this specific brief from a list given to me. I had to create graphics work for a sandwiches, wraps or rolls company that I had made up.

I was instantly inspired by my recent, yet disappointing trip to a Hot Dog stand in New York City - the place is notorious for this, but I found it the single biggest let down, from the taste to the branding. I thought surely SOMEONE should save future disappointed tourists’ expectations and give those beloved hot dogs a rebrand?!

And that’s what I based my project on. I went for bold and all-american as to not be outshone by the Times Square (well…!), with my primary inspiration from Roy Lichtenstein.

It was this project which got selected to be exhibited at the Fujitsu headquarters in London, and I have supplied a rather attractive selfie of myself and one of my pieces as evidence.
