Ought - Room Inside The World It doesn’t take long following this page to realize what a big fan I am of Ought. So of course I had to pick up their new album on purple vinyl. If I’m not mistaken the Purple version is limited to the Canadian distributor Royal Mountain, which for once makes me feel like there’s some benefits to collecting records up here. Although the white version does look nice as well. As for the actual music, it’s hard to believe but Ought continues their streak of near perfect records. With each record they’ve upped their playing, upped their production and upped their song writing. This album is a bit more of a departure in sound compared to the more live post-punk albums that came before. It also marks their first album for Merge Records (having left one of my favourite labels of all time Constellation, but let’s not hold that against them for now). This album has a bit less urgency, and finds a band mid-stride. Although being more relaxed does not take away from a marked improvement in playing and signing abilities. Desire has been on fairly regular rotation for me and it may just be my new favourite Ought song. The inclusion of Choir Choir Choir and a touch of saxophone from James Goddard really brings it all home. Alvvays - Alvvays After posting the Nap Eyes record a few days ago I got thinking of the time I saw them open for fellow maritime band Alvvays. Although that concert was actually in Ontario. Alvvays is an interesting band because all their members are east coasters but they kind of skipped straight to the Toronto stage of the NS-band lifecycle. For those from the West or from outside of Canada let me fill you in. If a band is on the East coast of Canada you first get big enough to move to Halifax (if you aren’t already here) then you get big enough to move to Toronto or Montreal (chances are you’ve already recorded an album there). Although to be fair, more and more, bands are roughing it out here just look at Wintersleep, Joel Plaskett, Rich Aucoin, Nap Eyes, etc. While I could go on about NS music, this album is one of the best records we can lay claim to in the last few years and one of the best debuts of an indie rock band in my opinion.
