Philip Mountbatten, Duke of Edinburgh|Royalty|Royal Consort|Fc:Matt Smith
After leaving the Navy, Philip never expected to fall for the heir to the throne. He’d known of her liking to him – the blushing thirteen-year-old she had been when they met, but thought nothing of it. She was just a girl then. When they encountered again, years later, he didn’t recognise her. The relationship was not an easy one, there were those who didn’t think the two should be together and normally he wouldn’t go through something like that for a woman. Elizabeth was different, he’d found someone who seemed to steady him, who seemed to be his guide post.
After her father’s death and accession to the throne, he seems to have lost his guide post. Their relationship is something strained, something he doesn’t like to like about – he no longer allows himself to reflect on their happy times in Malta, he feels those times are too far away now, something that’s too far out of reach. Something that they’ll never feel again. The only true joy he seems to find these days is when he’s playing with the children or when he’s flying in the air.
So he drinks. And he goes to his gentleman’s club and makes an arse out of himself with his friends and he stares at the beautiful women in cheap clothing that serve him drinks. He misses working with the navy, taking flying lessons in a desperate attempt to find some sort of thrill in his life. Although he’d be the last to admit it, he was suffering from a broken heart. His wife was having an affair and he knew that it would never end, it couldn’t. Her affair was with the crown, he had lost.
So he keeps drinking, and stumbling home late and doing things that he definitely shouldn’t be doing – not while he’s married to the queen of England. But he keeps doing it anyway, because the one thing the navy never taught him was to solider through a broken heart.
Queen Elizabeth II | Royalty | Monarch | Fc:Claire Foy
Elizabeth was never born to be queen.
She was born to live comfortably, to live a relatively normal life away from the media and would be able raise her children somewhere quiet with a big garden. Instead, her uncle abdicates to able to marry the woman he loved and very suddenly her father is the king and she is now heir to the throne. A life unexpected, a life unwanted.
However, she would like to say that the inheritance of the crown wasn’t entirely awful. It allowed her to meet Philip, though she was far too young for him on their first encounter. Serval chance meetings over the years allowed her to really fall in love with him, she’d fancied him right from the get-go but never did she really think the two would end up falling deeply for each other. Though she’d never admit it, a part of her had always admired what her uncle had done – given up everything for love. So, when Philip proposed and then later gave up his other titles so the two could be wed, she thought she had truly found her soulmate.
Life was never that easy.
Blissful years are spent in Malta and two beautiful children are brought into the world, her marriage is a happy one and she would never have reason to doubt her husband’s love for her. In a word, she would describe the life there as perfect, it was similar to the one she had been born for. Quiet. Loved. Happy.
Like all good things, it comes to an end. Devastated by the loss of her father, she takes the thrown. Becoming a Queen in a man’s world was by no means easy. Now her days are lonely, her husband spends his days God knows where, doing God knows what – she’s too afraid to ask. Too afraid that her doubts have truth to them. She hardly spends time with her children, her days filled with things that are deemed more important. Her relationship with her sister is strained – especially after what happened with Peter. Her life unexpected had begun. Cold. Busy. Lonely.
