        “am i?  i daresay it’s you, sybil.  you’re the actual   nurse around here.”  but edith smiles at her nonetheless, taking it as a compliment.  edith has never been as skeptical as her grandmother was about sybil’s decision to be a working woman, but she’s never quite appreciated until she was working herself.  helping out with the wounded soldiers was miles different from her little job at the farm and felt much more fulfilling.  even more so now, with a handful of the recovered soldiers crediting her specifically for keeping their spirits up during their recovery.  edith couldn’t begin to explain how good it felt to be appreciated.  “but thank you.  that means a lot to hear, truly.”

        “i suppose i should not find it thrilling that we   are to care for all these wounded soldiers in the grand scheme of things.”  because of the war, she means to say, but she’s decided to refrain from using that word.  while the soldiers were not likely to forget their time in the trenches any time soon, she could at least try not to remind them of it.  but edith did find it thrilling — not the suffering men per se, but the fact that being able to help them gave her a sense of fulfillment, a sense of purpose.  “but i daresay i understand why you wanted such a challenge in your life now, going into nursing and all.”

   “i don’t wanna know what it’s gonna BE LIKE when i’m OLD.”  maybe it was a little dark, but hiroto had been doing a lot of thinking about the future.  what it all meant, what it all looked like.  his parents had their plan, and he was simply a pawn in all of it.  he wasn’t sure what that meant for him, down the line.  but he was SCARED, even if he didn’t want to admit it. 

    he follows up with,  “not too be too dark or WHATEVER.”  talking about his feelings weren’t his STRONG SUIT.  and he couldn’t talk freely about the reason why he had been feeling this way.  he had to be CAREFUL.

“twenty?!  wow,”   she’s seen more,  she’s seen less,  but twenty’s a pretty solid number.   “how’d you manage that?”   curiosity is far from malicious,  but she realizes a second too late that it might not be a question he’s comfortable answering so she’s adds a follow-up. 

“you don’t have to answer if you don’t want to,  it’s not my business,  and as long as it’s healing well i don’t need to know.”   a pause,  a soft smile on her lips,   “so,  are you healing well then?  any sign of...  infection or anything?  swelling?  redness?  how long ‘til you get ‘em out?”

                  “Sybil, darling, I really wish you wouldn’t feel the need to sneak out to these...events.” The word is chosen carefully as Robert slowly turns with a glass of whiskey in his hand. A frown is evident as he quickly looks his daughter up and down to make sure she was not injured. “At least tell us -- tell someone before you go cavorting about in the city.”
