The Archives is pleased to announce the acquisition of the papers of painter Roy De Forest (1930–2007), donated by Gloria Marchant, Roy’s wife of 32 years.
Dogs were ever-present in Roy’s life. Snapshots in his papers reveal a canine chronology, from King in the 1960s, to Cato, De Forest’s last dog. These beloved animals are shown lounging in the studio, napping with the artist, and leading him on outdoor adventures. They also figure in his work, often as wide-eyed spirit guides to imaginary worlds.
In celebration of the artist's birthday on 2/11/1930, we are sharing 10 pictures of Roy and his beloved dogs.
