Roy G. Krenkel, American illustrator who specialized in fantasy and historical drawings and paintings was born on this date in 1918. One of his most famous books was Great Cities of the Ancient world. He won the Hugo Award for Best Professional Artist in 1963. This is a painting Tom did for his Gnemo project. At the suggestion of comic artist Paul Chadwick, Tom named the painting “Krenkelplatz”. No one knows exactly what the origin of the monument in the square is or how it was constructed. It was discovered buried within the very bedrock of McCay City. When it began glowing after it was reassembled it was likened to a gift left behind by some god. Indeed, much like Prometheus, it brought light to the people of this great city inspiring its scientists to make their own artificial light. Each year there is a celebration to commemorate the day these people discovered artificial light.
