“ I wouldn’t say upset -- FRIDAY, do I look upset? ”

     the man hardly spared his teammate a glance, though his eyes flicker pointedly to one of the displays in front of him.

“ Of course not, Mister Stark. ”

“ See? Listen to the magic robot lady, I’m sure she knows a thing or two. ”

“ Well. This is new. New is.. probably not horrible. ”

“ Ugh. ”      will drags his hand down his face in exasperation. as far as spell backfires went, and their potential to help.. anything, this wasn’t very high up on the list. ( as though the list of helpful backfires was very long in this world; they’d been helpful a total of about three fourths of a time, and even that was debatable. ) instead of the avenger team he’d wanted, he’d wound up with -- who’d have guessed? -- another smartass with a bow. “ Seriously? Not even someone with a power? ”

“ Hey. ..You’re not wrong, but hey. ”

“ If you keep playin’ with my hair like that, I might just fall in love with you again. ”

     there’s a beat, just one more moment of their quiet peace, before bucky realizes the words that have tumbled so easily from his lips. 

     he supposes it’s not too big a deal -- these are different times, those words don’t carry the weight that they used to. at least.. they don’t in the outside world.

     in the here and now, though, bucky can feel his heart kick up in his ribcage, rattling the bones as he forgets to breathe. he covers it up, tries to brush it off with a cough.
