Magik Markers: Inverted Belgium (2006)
Peak hipster A.D. at its finest (2004-2009) when I attended Stony Brook University and double the money when I was WUSB program director, so that’s my cred- right there. Thurston Moore’s Ecstatic Peace! label issued their debut I Trust My Guitar, Etc. and it was one of the best things I discovered during the Aughts. Then Prurient / Dominick Fernow issued this 12″ single-sided vinyl pressing of the Connecticut noise mavens’ May 9, 2005 Tienen live show back when places like Providence and Lowell were hotspots for noise music and RRRecords and Load Records took precedent, and notable for the face-slashing incident where lead singer Elisa Ambroglio took a band member’s bass to the face. Consider this the younger sister of Harry Pussy’s Ride A Dove (1996): it’s an explosive distorted mess that pins itself on red and over-amplifies surrounding areas to (about) an 8 on the Richter scale. Though only half as long and Ambroglio’s not screaming her lungs out in a psychotic chaotic vision like Pussy’s Adris Hoyos, the Markers’ mission of vacuumed guitars, crumbling drums, and buzz-bee frequencies cooks the surface to a scraping char and gets the job done.
We couldn’t believe we skipped this over until now, so we owed it a complete spin on this past summer’s bonus noise volume, which was Omega WUSB’s 275th broadcast.
Various – RRR 500 (Various 500 Lock-Grooves By 500 Artists)
After posting Emil Beaulieau @ourladyomega had a very nice post on him and his label RRRecords. This got me thinking about one of RRRecords most singular achievements RRReecords 500, 500 locked grooves by 500 artists.
If you don’t know what a locked groove is (damn kids) A locked groove is a continuous loop of music the length of one full rotation of the record. A rotation is about 1.5 seconds of music that plays on repeat until you take the needle off the record.
This record had 500 of these loops with contributions from Sonic Youth, Deerhoof, Merzbow, :Zoviet*France, Synapsescape, Brutal Truth, Bastard Noise, Cock E.S.P., Masonna and much much more.
