This year’s Zappa thing for Record Store Day was this 180g clear vinyl edition of The Guitar World According to Frank Zappa, a 30-minute compilation of guitar-solo-oriented pieces originally released on cassette via Guitar World magazine and Zappa’s own Barfko-Swill mail-order outlet. At the time, most of these cuts were previously unreleased, and by now most of them have appeared elsewhere, BUT Zappa being Zappa, of course some of the cuts on this release are unique and / or vary from other released versions of the same pieces in some way. Since there’s only 8 tracks, I’ll give you a quick but complete NerdNotes rundown.

1. “Sleep Dirt” [is a very slightly different edit of the title cut from Sleep Dirt.] 2. “Friendly Little Finger” [is the same as the cut from Zoot Allures, except the stereo image is reversed and it’s definitely got a different EQ going on.] 3. “Excerpt from Revised Music For Guitar and Low-Budget Symphony Orchestra” [is that guitar-solo-with-trombones section of “Revised Music For Guitar and Low-Budget Orchestra” from Studio Tan, but the mix is pretty different, especially in that it features overdubbed bass and drums, like those 80′s remixes of WOIIFTM and CWRATJ. A remix of the entire track hasn’t yet been released, so this cut is exclusive to this thing.] 4. “Things That Look Like Meat” [is about 48 seconds shorter than the cut on Guitar.] 5. “Down in De Dew” [is the same mix and edit of the cut on Läther, minus the Läther sound collage bit at the end.] 6. “A Solo From Heidelberg” [was also released in the same edit as “Heidelberg” on One Shot Deal.] 7. “A Solo From Cologne” [is almost 2 minutes longer than the cut released on Guitar as “But Who Was Fulcanelli?”, making the first 1:57 of this track exclusive to this thing.] 8. “A Solo From Atlanta” [was released as “For Duane” on Guitar, but this cut is 40 seconds longer with a big wind-up / rock-out ending.]

Oh, this RSD 2019 release was “limited” to 8000 copies, of which mine is stamped # 0640.

Goddammit, I said I wasn't going to do Record Store Day again this year, and I just got the list of releases, and yeah there's some cool stuff, but nothing amazing, so I can stay home and sleep - but oh no, there it is, right at the bottom of this 15 page goddamn list, a vinyl release for the Sharp Objects soundtrack. Brilliant. Great. So I guess I have to get up at 5am again and queue in the cold for hours again, thanks a bunch companies or whoever.

Edgar Froese composed the music as a tribute to John Peel after the legendary broadcaster’s sudden death at the title location in 2004. It was first released on CD in 2012 and made its vinyl debut in 2019, four years after Froese’s own passing.
