The way Locke describes Jabril..... Bi king
Forget everything else my favorite moment in all these books is Locke yelling "piss!" At a 3 year old to make her laugh
I'm finally getting back into the world of the Gentleman Bastard series and I'm so happy.
I'm gonna puke
Chains after a long day of raising Locke, Calo, Galdo, Sabetha, and Jean while pretending to be a blind charity priest
Book Review #71 of 2021--
Red Seas Under Red Skies by Scott Lynch. Rating: 4.5 stars.
Read from August 11th to 14th.
I absolutely didn’t think I was going to finish this one as quickly as I did. It only took me four days to read this long and dense fantasy novel that I really enjoyed. I will say that a lot of my free time during those four days was devoted to reading. For those who may not know, this is the second book in the Gentleman Bastard series about Locke and Jean who are two con artists that were raised under the tutelage of a master con artist. This one had a lot of the banter and wit that I loved but I still found myself missing Camorr and the whole world from book one that we left behind.
I love Jean Tannen so much and I think that has only increased upon reading book two. I will say that I was a bit concerned about him for a minute there. But there’s so much to love about this big burly guy who can quote poetry and kick your ass at the same time. (Are you swooning yet? I am.) I also love the scrawny master mind that is Locke Lamora. I think one of the things that most draws me into this world, aside from world building and setting and the general beauty of the world, is the characters. The author does such a great job of making even the most minor character a well thought out and developed person. Also, the narrative style and the sense of humor that the author pours into the writing are exactly my jam.
I will say that I enjoyed this one a little less than I enjoyed book once which originally got a 5 star rating from me. I missed Camorr during this one, but I also had an issue with the way things move throughout this story. We have this one scheme that Locke and Jean are trying to pull off when they’re forced into a different scheme and then they finally circle back around to the first one. It was also something that got played around with in book one, but in this one it felt like a more meandering plot device. Saying that, I still gave this book 4.5 stars. I love this world and these characters and the narrative style. I can’t wait to read book 3 and to join all of those other poor saps waiting around for book 4.
Literally their ONE documented weakness is the other and I'm in a ball on the floor sobbing about it. Everyone - everyone - knows that the only way to get Locke to cooperate is to threaten Jean and vice versa. Fucking HELL
