Transitioning to writing fics for RWBY in addition to the Tales of Arcadia, honestly, has been really interesting.  Just, my relationship to the canon material for both is massively different, so that’s reflected in the feel that goes along with writing for them.

Like, I’ve never been particularly inspired by the canon ships of ToA.  Thus I tend to transform and alter things as I see fit.  The ToA canon is more akin to a sand box I play in and built off of.  Almost nothing I do is canon-compliant, the ships I ship will never be canon.  I’ve accepted becoming satisfied with that.

In comparison, I do enjoy the popular pairings of RWBY, so I’m more inclined to stay aligned to canon.  I’m still going to transform things tho and definitely write for other ships, but it’s probable that some of the things I’ll write will be canon compliant.

selfishly I do wonder how things would have played out if we'd had one more Floating Array moment. if one (or many) of its swords had been among the cases Ruby was considering while in the workshop

not just because PENNY FEELINGS, but because... I wish we'd had a little more time there. just one more beat between Ruby contending with what she's seen and and Ruby choosing Herself-- something to help transition out of the hurt and exhaustion and into the newfound willingness to try-- and I feel like that might have been a good prompt for it. we see Summer's axe and Alyx's knife in both the forge in episode 5 and among the cases at the workshop, so I don't think it would have been redundant per se. more of a--

Penny died, too, is all. and she came back herself, and Ruby was so glad to have Penny back; changed, but still Penny. Ruby did everything she could to preserve Penny, to honor her, to protect her, and to revisit the way she'd eulogized her-- that the thing she admired most, the best she'd saved for last, was she saw the world through better eyes-- might have hit all the right beats. Ruby's message to Penny was always YOU'RE A REAL GIRL. Your feelings are real, your soul is precious, your convictions are your own and the fact that you're daunted by the challenges you're facing only makes you a person. like anyone else. all the things Ruby most needs to remind herself, in this moment.

also if she'd touched Crescent Rose again and said "I'm combat ready" i would have started crying and never stopped so there's that
