also hunt with me + reuben/arya (post- or mid-rebellion ofc) because #bros and i miss their dumb faces

it occurs to reuben that this is the wood where his brother was shot, perhaps on this very spot. it’s not where he died, but it’s close enough. it seems arya is thinking about it too.

"do you ever think about him?" she asks. "you brother."

it’s strange seeing her out here, quite literally a different light. she still bears the same regalness she always does, but it’s looser, somehow. this is the arya he never saw before - the one alastor fell in love with.

he thinks on it too long, as always, but arya is patient. “sometimes,” reuben says at last, squinting into the distance where the trees blend together. “do you?”

"sometimes."

he understands that she wish she did not, and truth be told, he can’t argue. and when her arrow finds the heart of a deer, he understands that perhaps it was arya’s arrow who found risteard’s heart after all.

"alastor is better with you, anyway," he says, and it’s true. alastor is better, and perhaps so is she. even reuben feels something different. it was unfamiliar for a long time, but he thinks it is peace.
