Danish designer Cecilie Manz reinvents the hotel minibar for Wallpaper* Handmade 2015

Cecilie Manz and Denmark’s oldest cabinetmaking workshop Rud. Rasmussen’s minibar concept for Wallpaper* Handmade 2015 transforms a well-known object into a complete experience.

The annual Wallpaper* Handmade show presents “one-off wonders” crafted by today’s best designers, artists and manufacturers at the Salone del Mobile in Milan. The exhibition is known as a hub for innovative, thought-provoking, and often surprising design innovation. 

The compact, distilled minibar cabinet composed of carefully selected materials that highlight the designer’s and cabinetmaker’s shared passion for detail, shows uncompromising quality and sublime craftsmanship.

“A minibar should be both a salvation and a temptation,” says Cecilie Manz. “You should be able to find both water to quench your thirst and champagne to celebrate life.” Collaborating with Manz was a natural choice for Rud. Rasmussen. As David Obel Rosenkvist, CEO of Rud. Rasmussen, explains, “Among contemporary Danish designers, Cecilie Manz is the finest representative of the Danish design tradition. Her work constitutes the renewal of the unbroken line that extends from the Grand Masters represented in Rud. Rasmussen's collection and history: Kaare Klint, Mogens Koch and Poul Kjærholm. In fact, her approach to design – from feasibility study and analysis through solution – is straight out of the Klint school and is one of the most exciting, inspiring examples of the interpretation of modern Danish design today.”

Iittala and Bang & Olufsen, two other Manz collaborators, have also contributed to the project. Iittala has provided the delicate, mouth-blown crystal glasses, and Bang & Olufsen – a BeoPlay A2 speaker in a previously unseen, fresh yellow hue, which will dangle off the minibar’s side, completing the sensory experience.
