. . Clovis Ruffin (1946 - April 7, 1992) was a fashion designer who died of AIDS in New York City. Ruffin was 46 years old. His partner Donald Sachs also died of AIDS. . Born in Clovis, New Mexico, Ruffin grew up in Egypt and Europe. In his teens, he returned to America where he attended the High School of Art and Design, Manhattan and @columbia University. He also studied at the @sorbonne_univ, Paris. . Although he started out as a photographer, Ruffin went on to become the youngest fashion designer to win a Coty award in 1973, having only created his own label — #Ruffinwear — the previous year. . Ruffin who claimed to be the creator of the wrap dress, designed for the likes of @dianaross, @msgladysknight and the @alvinailey dancers. He is also remembered for being one of the first designers to employ models of color in his runway shows. . Harriet Wright, his mother, who passed away 4 years ago, wrote in her memoir — “Clovis did whatever his instincts told him to do, regardless of what others said or thought. He had a vision and knew what he wanted.
