a/n: i sat for an hour in an unstable mental state after seeing this ruggie bucchi card. yana put her whole ass into this card. me thinks yana has a secret favorite, i mean have you seen ruggie's ssr cards ??? bangers
You tapped your phone screen once more, checking the time. It had been at least 20 minutes since the spelldrive match had ended and the NRC team had gone back to their locker room. You were trying to be patient, but it was killing you how long your boyfriend was taking. One after one, the team started to leave, but there was no sign of your biscuit brown, tousled-haired beau. You checked your phone one last time before you huffed and pushed past the entrance doors. You made your way past the short hallway of lockers into the open space where only a few team members remained, gathering their gear and belongings. Ruggie sat on the bench in the middle of the room.
He had already taken off his black athletic shirt and was in the process of taking off his cleats. He had music playing from his phone, feeling the rhythm and quietly singing to himself as he unstrapped his knee braces and put them in his bag. You stood there in front of him, hearing the sounds of the other lockers closing and the not so subtle whispers about a girl being in the boys’ locker room as the last of the team left for the night. You rested your hands on your hips and put on your best pouting face for him to see when he finally acknowledged you standing there. You watched as he continued to take his time removing each of his things and tucking them away in his bag. He softly changed his gaze to look at you, raised one eyebrow and grinned as he sang to you. “Baby, you a gangster, got my hands tied. Fallin’ for you deeper girl, I can’t lie. So sweet, like honey, honey.~ ”
“Ruggie, come on. It’s getting late and I want to go back to the dorms. It’s already cold and I’m tired,” you whined, grabbing his hand and tugging on it. “Honey, Honey, Honey, workin’ for you like a bee. Buzzin’ for you baby, baby. Tell me what you need. What you need, ha, you can say please,” he continued to serenade you with a look that on normal occasions would have you melting, but not at this moment. You dropped his hand harshly and lightly pinched one of his ears. “Hey, hey, those are sensitive,” he groaned before chuckling to himself and pulling out his normal everyday clothes from his bag. “And you’re tired? I forgot you just played in the match, my bad, chief.” He grabbed your hand back and pulled you onto his lap.
“Stop, you’re all sweaty and gross!” you exclaimed, clambering to get out of his grip. Your need to get away only made him pull you closer into his embrace. “But, I thought you liked this,” he snickered as he nuzzled his sweat soaked forehead on your shoulder. His eyes were beaming as he looked up at you, his fangs peaking through his mischievous grin. It was a hard sight to be upset at, and he knew that all too well. He knew you all too well. “Ruggie,” you whined again. “Say please, or we stay here all night,” he teased. “Please, Ruggie, hurry up,” you replied, your voice monotonous. His ears drooped a bit as he looked at you. “That doesn’t sound very sincere.”
“What? You want me to get on the floor and beg?” His ears perked up at your suggestion, which was supposed to be more of a rhetorical question. “Ruggie, I’m not getting on the floor and begging you to get undressed so we can go home.” You watched as his eyes trailed from your eyes to your lips and then back to your eyes. “You don’t want me undressed? I’m hurt. What do I do all this working out for then? For the boys?” he asked playfully. You lightly pushed him back and rolled your eyes. “You know what I mean. You’re still partially in your uniform and have to change. Don’t you think we should go home and rest? You guys just won another placement match, so you’ll want to be ready for the semifinals.”
“Yeah, yeah. We can go soon.” He moved you off his lap and onto the bench before standing up. He grabbed the hand towel that had been on the opposite side of him and used it to dry off the droplets of sweat on his face, neck, and chest before tossing it back on the bench. The locker room didn’t have much going on visually besides the random “team spirit” and “sportsmanship” posters hanging up on the walls behind a row of lockers. Ruggie was much more aesthetically pleasing to look at than them. You watched observantly as he searched his shirt for the tag so he put it on right, his forearm flexing every time his grip changed on the fabric. He pulled the shirt over his head, making sure to let his ears through first so they didn’t get tugged on.
He noticed you looking at his arms as he pulled his shirt down and straightened it out. “Don’t ogle me, weirdo.” He stood in front of you and leaned down to meet your eye level and placed one hand on either side of you. “Y’know, we did just win, and we don’t have to leave the locker rooms just yet.” Again, his fangy grin had you enamored as you felt your blood rushing to your face. You took the damp towel he had used previously and shoved it in his face between you both. “I wanna go home, Ruggie, please, you’re the one being a weirdo,” you teased playfully. “Yeah, okay, I’ll remember that. See if I share any of my snacks with you then,” he sighed as he ruffled his hair.
“Snacks?” you said intrigued. He bit his lip and shrugged as he grabbed his pants and walked off to the bathroom. “Ruggie, wait- are the snacks here??” you shouted to him. He just snickered as he closed the door without saying anything more.
I just read your new Snake!Viper and Octopus!Azul and I love them both soooo much!! I hope you dont mind but can you also make one for Hyena!Ruggie? • x • ;; Even more funny if the reader has never seen an actual Hyena and just thought they were a poor stray dog oof-
Yesssssss, this is such a cute concept! I've really enjoyed all these "Twist boy gets turned into representative animal" fics so far. I've got another coming down the pipeline soon too for all those Heartslabyul fans out there!
Fluff, GN! Reader, Hyena! Ruggie
"Give that back, you big, stupid dog!"
On one hand, you were a little bit proud. Ace had managed to go the whole morning without Grim swiping any of his snacks. He'd even made it to lunch time without issue, able to grab his sandwich of choice without so much as an irritated grumble from the demonic cat.
On the other hand, there had to be some special sort of misfortune working its magic against Ace for him to settle down beneath a tree in the courtyard, unwrap the plastic from his sandwich, and almost instantly have it snatched from his grasp by, of all things, a stray dog.
"Get back here, you mutt! I paid for that!"
The dog in question was leading Ace in circles around the well, making delighted chuffing noises through the half a sandwich still hanging from his drooling maw. It wasn't like any stray dog you'd ever seen before, here or back home. It was tall, hunched, with large, rounded ears and a strange, spiked mohawk running down its back.
And it was adorable.
"You're not even going to eat that if you do get it back." You called to Ace, who had slumped into the grass next to the well and begun gasping for air, clearly winded. The dog sat a few paces from him, relaxed as he tossed his head back and swallowed the rest of the sandwich whole. "It's all slobbery now anyway. Just let him eat it."
"Oh, you're taking his side?! That was my lunch money! Down the hatch of some big, stinky mutt!"
"Don't be mean, Ace! He's probably hungry. Why else would he be stealing food?" You picked over your own lunch, tearing your own sandwich in half and picking a few strawberries from your fruit cup. You whistled for the dog, waggling the sandwich in a manner you hoped would make it appear more tempting. "Come here, buddy! Who's a good boy? Want something nummy?"
It barely took a moment before the dog was bounding up to you, tail wagging in a blur as it snarfed the sandwich from your grip, big tongue lapping all over your fingers as it chomped down the handful of cut strawberries as well. You couldn't help but let out a delighted laugh at his antics, burying your hands in the thick, wiry fur around his neck and shoulders.
"Aww, that's a hungry boy! I bet you didn't get to have lunch today, did you puppy?" You cooed, babbling high-pitched nothings to the dog soaking up your attention as you ruffled his fur up and down, scratching under the chin and behind the ears, smushing his face between your hands.
"I can't believe you're actually choosing a dog over me right now. That's harsh, Prefect."
"But look how sweet he is, though! Baby boy!~" The dog was melting into your affections, eyes blissfully shut as his tail thumped upon the soft grass.
And really, for a stray dog he was being incredibly sweet. Had he possibly been abandoned? That would explain why he was so good about being pet. It wouldn't explain how he got into a school campus, though.
You pat the grass next to you. "Wanna lay next to me, buddy? Come here! That's a good boy." The dog cozied up next to you, resting his chin and one paw up on your leg with a contended huff. You wasted no time in burying your fingers in the thick fur on his mohawk, which made the pup begin whining in delight. "Oh, you love getting scritchies, don't you? Yes you do! Yes you do!"
So smitten were you with this adorable, seemingly stray dog, that you failed to notice another one of your school friends jogging up to join the two of you. Jack slowed to a stop a good few paces away, offering a hand to haul his fellow first-year to his feet.
"I didn't realize you'd found Senpai. I've been looking all over campus for him." He gave Ace a hearty slap on the back, which only served to send Ace into a second fit of wheezing coughs. "We managed to figure out who tried to cast a spell on Leona, but we haven't figured out how to break it yet."
"Wha... What are you talking about? Cast on... On who? What?" Through his wheezing Ace was barely able to gasp out his confusion. Somehow, you and your new canine friend had remained oblivio0us to the conversation happening nearby as you begin nuzzling your face into the top of his head.
Jack huffed, crossing his arms. "A Savanaclaw second-year attempted to curse the Housewarden with a magical bracelet that would transform him into a beast. Unfortunately, Leona didn't want it, so he handed it off to Ruggie-senpai. So now..." He gestured to the massive dog draped across your lap. "We don't know how to get him back to normal."
"Wait, hold on. So that's... That's Ruggie? The dog?"
"Hyena. But yes."
".....snrk."
"This isn't funny, Ace."
"P-PWAHAHAHAHA! ARE YOU KIDDING? THE PREFECT'S BEEN ALL OVER HIM! THIS IS HILARIOUS!"
As Ace hit the ground again, this time in a flurry of laughter, you finally glanced up and noticed Jack standing there. As you made a move to stand up, however, the dog whined, draping his paw further across your lap.
"Don't worry, buddy! I'm just gonna go talk to my friend, okay?" When the dog only whimpered again, you smiled and leaned forward to press a kiss in between his fuzzy ears. "It'll just be a m-"
POOF!
A cloud of smoke quickly engulfed you and the dog, thick and sandy-yellow and smelling of grasses and fresh laundry. You coughed a bit, waving your arm around to force it to dissipate more quickly, and as it did you saw the friendly pup you'd been cuddling with had been replaced by Ruggie, head laying across your lap and blinking up at you with an owlish expression. You stared down at him, and he stared up at you.
"Uhh... Woof?"
You yelped, jumping to your feet and forcing the second-year to tumble from your lap and into the grass. You covered your face with both hands and could feel it burning beneath your palms. Of all the people to secretly be a big, adorable dog, did it have to be the one you were crushing on? Oh, you wanted to crawl into a hole and just die.
Ace's raucous laughter in the near distance was doing you no favors, you could see him kicking his feet in the air through the gaps in your fingers. Jack, at least, has the decency to look a bit embarrassed in your stead. He moved towards his upperclassman and towed the shorter boy to his feet.
"I hope he didn't give you any trouble, Prefect." Jack bowed to you, Ruggie standing a bit behind him with the faintest hint of color to his cheeks.
"It's fine." You barked out, though it was mostly muffled by your palms. "You should go see the Professor or something. Anything."
"Right. Of course. Senpai?" Jack turned to Ruggie, but Ruggie just motioned for Jack to move past him as he stepped towards you.
"Gimme a sec, alright? I'll catch right up. Scout's honor."
"Please don't disappear again, senpai."
Jack stepped away to give you two a bit of privacy, no matter how desperately you hoped he'd stay and save you from this awkwardness. Ruggie stood there a moment before clearing his throat, scuffing his shoe against the dirt.
"I was just gonna take yer sandwiches. I wasn't expectin' you to get all sweet on me or anythin'. So don't think I was like, tryin' to trick you."
"Mhm." You responded. Still muffled, still hidden.
"And it's not like I didn't like it or anythin', either. So if either of us should be embarrassed it's probably me!"
You peeked through your fingers again, slowly beginning to bring your hands down. Ruggie's cheeks were getting redder by the minute, and he seemed to be making every effort not to look at your face as he continued to ramble.
"So if you wanna like, like uh, pet me, or scratch my ears, or... or k-kiss my head or anythin', that's-that's fine. I won't even make you get me a sandwich for it. I don't mind." He tucked his chin, one hand rubbing at the back of his neck as he stared into the ground. "...I kinda like it, anyway. If it's you."
Your heart did an eager stutter jump in your chest, but before you could respond Ruggie had already pivoted on his heel and begun jogging down the hill towards Jack.
"See ya around, Prefect!" He barked out. "Thanks for the grub!"
You couldn't see Ruggie's expression as he and Jack walked away. But with his ears flattened, shoulders hunched, and hands pulled up to his cheeks as Jack looked him over in visible confusion, you couldn't imagine it could be that much different from your own.
TWST characters as my preschool students and what they have done and/or said
feat: Savanaclaw dorm
genre: absolute cuteness, adorable audacity of children
note: I will not reveal the children’s identities for privacy law reasons, and yea…the audacity of these kids are insane
Leona is the child that has a strange amount of charisma for a child. He’s barely able to count but many of the other kids see him as a natural leader. Sometimes he’s fine with other kids following him around but other times he seems to be annoyed and tired with it and actually has the audacity to use you as a shield of sorts.
Leona, walking to you and sitting down
Teacher!You: hmm? Leona, hello
Leona, dumps a book on you and leans his head on your shoulder: Read to me
Teacher! You: …anything else you might want to say?
Leona: …please
Teacher!You, sighing but smiling: alright
Ruggie is such an odd child when you first get to know him, surveying you and checking in on you every once in a while. But he’s not a bad kid! He’s friendly and follow directions really well but always seems to think before he acts. He’s kind but very quick-witted and resourceful, especially for his age.
Teacher! You: I’m not sure if Ruggie is comfortable with me
Coworker: Oh, he is. Don’t worry about it
Teacher!You: Really?
Coworker: Yea, he just knows now that you won’t give him extra treats during snack time if he acts sweet. So he stopped trying.
Teacher!You: …wow.
Like Riddle, Jack was an obedient and hard working child which made you proud of his achievements but sometimes you worried if he actually enjoyed his time at school. He was very responsible at a young age and was active both in class and during outside activities (especially outside activities). It took a while for him to come near you for help and you realized that while he puts up a silent but strong front, he’s really quite shy.
Coworker: Oh, Jack absolutely adores you!
Teacher! You: What makes you say that? Did he tell you?
Coworker: Oh no. But whenever you pass by the classroom window or when you’re not looking, he would always watch you and would sometimes want to call out your name but stops himself.
Teacher!You: aww, Jack~
Jack, absolutely refuses to look at either of you: …
"I think I have Care of Magical Creatures." They said, showing the timetable with the abbreviation to the table. Sebek grinned, as did one of the younger students they'd yet to meet.
"Me too! I love all the cool creatures." The small student said, grinning at the prefect. They smiled and gave him a wave back before turning back to their breakfast. He introduced himself as Ortho Shroud, a third year excited to finally get to do some elective courses. Ruggie mentioned that he was also taking CoMC, making the prefect smile wider. The other Hufflepuffs kept eating and chatting, preparing for the upcoming class. They glanced at Silver, who had mentioned his Arithmancy class which earned some teasing from Sebek. Silver rolled his eyes before tossing an orange at Sebek who dodged it and mocked Silver. The prefect smiled at their newfound friends, hopeful for their future in the house of the badgers.
The group headed down to the forest edge, where Professor Serephim was waiting for them. She smiled and introduced herself, telling the students to sit in groups and wait for the rest of their class. The prefect smiled as they say with their fellow Hufflepuffs, joined shortly by their other friends as some Gryffindors reached the groups.
"Ruggie! Didn't see you all summer!" Ace said, tossing an extra quill at the upperclassman. The Hufflepuff rolled his eyes and snatched up the quill.
"None of your business." He said, grinning at the ginger. Before Ace could retort, the professor clapped to call everyone to attention, splitting everyone into groups to meet some of the creatures they'd be working with that semester. Everyone eagerly gathered into groups, cooing over and petting the animals.
"So, now that you've all met the creatures, I have a surprise for you all! I am giving you a month long project. It will be with a partner, and you will be writing a report on your chosen creature! Multiple groups can do the same creature, but you will still be in pairs." She explained, lining the creatures up. The prefect smiled and looked over all the creatures, trying to decide which to pick.
Ace and Deuce both wanted to work with the Fire Crab, while Jack and Ruggie seemed to be vying for the Hippogriff. Sebek seemed interested in the Glow Bug. The prefect was surprised to see so few students looking at the Bowtrickle, only Ortho walking over to the green creature. The prefect considered their options for a moment before deciding on their creature and partner, heading to...
[what creature and which student do you want to work with?]
summary - vil is in need of two people for a cutscene on his film. rook just so happens to know the right people that vil is searching for.
genre - fluff
vil reads the sentence on the script that he had been assigned with. "a scene where it showcases lovers chase each other around in the coutrtyard?" he mumbles the words on the paper. he continues to read the whole script to understand the whole thing, and maybe grasp a thing or two from the details. "rook." he called over the vice housewarden.
rook had immediately appeared the second he heard his name being called. "why, now if it isn't roi du poison who has called upon my presence." he walks up towards vil. "what is it that you are in need of?" he asks him. "if by any chance, do you happen to know anyone in the campus who has a romantic liking towards each other?"
rook lets out a hum while thinking of an answer. "well, that is such not a common thing that you would encounter in the campus." rook was new to that kind of topic. "but worry not, roi du poison. as it appears that i have someone in mind who matches with what you are in search for." rook tells vil. "and whoever could those people be?" he asks rook, demanding for an answer.
he lets out a loud laugh before even answering vil's question. "once i am about to give you the answer, you will be sure left into shock." vil gives him a look where he didn't care who those people were as long as he could find the right people for the scene. "i doubt i would be. seeing as it's not surprising at all to know some kind of information." he tells rook.
"the people i suggest you look into are mosnieur dandelion and the trickster prefect, mc!" vil had now finally gotten his answer. he lets out a nod after he got what he needed. "i only require a short cutscene from those two. any people shall do." rook happily smiles at his response. "very well then! magnefique!" rook reacted. vil went back to reading the script until rook wanted to tell him something.
"might i suggest to add something onto this cutscene, you speak of?" he asks for vil's approval to let him hear about his idea even though he isn't part of the club. "i have come to a guess that you want to be involved within the two since you are so curious about their dynamics." vil makes up an assumption to him.
"oh, no! i'd never allow myself to cause a scene between them." rook shook his head. "it is because ruggie and mc have an unusual way of approaching each other. and i shall have to fix that, so everything would turn out magnefique!" he explains. vil nodded as he agreed to hear from his idea. "let me hear from you." he tells rook as he now finally began to share his idea with him.
ruggie was whistling through his mouth while making his way to the cafeteria. leona couldn't be with him at this time since he was still in his nap. he decided to go alone and fetch food for him on his way there. then he was stopped by a tall figure infront of him.
"bonjour, monsieur dandelion! what a happy coincidence to see you here around this area." ruggie gave a deadpanned look towards rook. he was unsure with why he suddenly approached him. "i don't know what you want from me rook, but do you mind making it quick? i'm dead hungry right now." he said.
"ah, it seems that you have been famished from all the tiring lessons! i apologize. i'll be quick with my explaining." ruggie nods as he lets him continue. "the cafeteria is crowded up with so many people because of a famous food brand that made it's arrival here." rook says. "well, that's expected. what's wrong with that?" ruggie wondered with confusion on his voice.
but before rook could continue with his explaining, he lets out the most dramatic sigh. "i saw the trickster mc and their monsieur fuzzball take the last stock of the food." ruggie's eyes suddenly widened. he lets out a gasp. "what?! mc said they would treat me to that food, and this is what they do?!" rook's plan had already work. he lets out a smile as he realizes it.
"i know that feeling, monsieur dandelion. having someone to not keep your promise is truly the same with the feeling of being stabbed in the heart." rook does another one of his dramatic antics once again. "they really did tricked me with their two-faced personality. hm, i'll make them regret it." ruggie was already mad at you for doing such a thing. he then makes his way to the cafeteria to approach you and grim. rook told the fellow cameramen behind him to follow so that they would record the planned scene.
you had already bought the food that you promised to give to ruggie. grim was upset that you didn't buy one for him. "so you could buy those jock guys food, but not me?" he says. you rolled your eyes to his reaction. "you have those canned tunas back at the dorm. why worry about this?" you asked grim who was still upset about the situation. then you came to see ruggie approaching you.
"hey ruggie-" he harshly grabbed the food in your hands. you were shocked that he didn't use his magic onto you. "i see where this is going, mc." you were stunned to speak as you heard that sentence. "you chose to throw your promise away? you think i'm dumb enough to forget about that? well you're wrong, mc." you didn't know what lead to ruggie acting like this. you looked at him with confusion. "ruggie, give that food back. i don't know what you're talking about, but please give it back-" he starts to yank your hand away from him as he took a step backward.
"since you lied and scammed me into thinking you'd treat me this food, i'll have to steal it from you." grim gasped at his words. "are you out of your mind?!" he yells. "i'm not. i'm just doing what's fair." he lets out a grin before laughing. you began to groan from frustration towards ruggie. "ruggie, you are seriously stressing me out here. give me that food-"
as you attempted to grab the bag of food off his hands, he began to run away in just a dash. "ARE YOU KIDDING ME RIGHT NOW?!" you stomped on your feet as you yelled. you started to chase down ruggie to clear up something with him.
"wait, i wanna go too!" you threw grim off the moment he stood in your way. "stay there with ace, deuce, and epel. you're just gonna worsen the problem even more." you told him then you started to run off to find ruggie.
you saw ruggie heading downstairs with the bag of food that was still in his hands. you began to sprint your way downstairs as well, hoping that you'd catch him in just a matter of time. "RUGGIE, GIVE IT BACK NOW!" you raised your voice so he could hear it.
"nope, you're facing the consequences." you gritted your teeth as you heard his response. ruggie made his way to the courtyard and ran to a spot where you lost track of him. "damn it!" you cursed under your breath. you ran to the spot where you clearly saw ruggie walking into. you took a pause to let out all the exhaustion from running. you fell onto your kneels as you panted.
then you heard a voice behind you. "getting tired already? too bad you have nothing to eat since i already stole it from you." of course it had to be ruggie. he lets out the most annoying laugh after. you stood up from your position as you turned to look at him with a glare on your face. "you think you're so funny for that, huh?" you asked him.
ruggie shrugged his shoulders as an answer. "that food is for you, dumbass! i planned to give it to you!" you cleared it up for him. "huhhhhh?" he couldn't process on what you had just said told him. his face started to turn red. "you mean to tell me that this other piece is for me?" he lets out the food in the bag. "YES!" you responded angrily.
"i don't know what made you think that i only bought those for myself but you are really a dumbass, i tell you ruggie." ruggie felt offended to what you said towards him. "maybe if you said so sooner, we wouldn't be dealing with all of this!" you scoffed at his words. "yeah but you kept avoiding me everytime i try to explain something." you point it out to him.
the two of you turned to look at rook the moment you both had noticed a tall shadow figure standing in between. "bravo, fantastic i must say!" rook clapped his hands loudly while walking towards you both. there were students who walked out of the area holding cameras in their hands. that lead you and ruggie both very confused.
ruggie then looks over at you as he remembered something. "oh, and i forgot to tell you that rook was behind this mess in the first place. he told me that you bought snacks for grim only and not me." he reminds you. you immediately turned to look at rook, shooting a glare at him. "what seems to be the matter, trickster mc?" rook notices the look on your face. he acted so oblivious. you and ruggie are about to plot some revengeful action against him for causing all of this.

“♪♪ Spooky Scary Skeletons, Send shivers down your spine~”
You had been cleaning around the Ramshackle dorm all day because to be honest, it just needed more TLC than what you had been able to give it lately. It was the last day of September, but this was just the beginning of your real spooky season.
Every year you’d do a deep clean and then decorate your home in festive decorations. Bright green and purple witches’ hats and cauldrons, a bucket on every table with Halloween candies, and your favorite ghosts and pumpkins placed in just the right spots.
Decorating Ramshackle felt different than when you’d do your house back home, but you were trying to make the best of it since this was your favorite holiday. So you woke up this morning and immediately got to work and turned on your spooky music playlist after breakfast.
DING DONG !
You stopped in your tracks, trying to figure out why on earth someone would be here this early- and on the weekend nonetheless. You tossed your cleaning rag onto the couch and opened the front door.
“Hi, I have some pumpkin spice drinks for-,” they acted like they were reading a nonexistent label on the two drinks in their hands. “For a Y/N? Do you know them? They’re still supposed to tip me for these~”
The hyena beastman standing in your doorway gave a fangy grin as he handed you one of the drinks. “Rug, what are you doing here? Do you realize how early it is?” You stepped aside so he could come inside the dorm.
“Mmph,” he said with a nod as he drank his drink and plopped down on the couch, scooting the dirty cleaning rag away from him with his hand. He placed his drink on the coffee table, making sure he was using the coasters sitting out.
“I mean, yeah, I know what time it is. It’s spooky time.” You rolled your eyes at him and chuckled. “Okay, sure, but why not come over later? It’s like the crack ass of dawn right now,” you said as you leaned over the back of the couch next to him. “What? You don’t want my help? Aren’t you putting up your decorations today? Sure looks like you could use me. Y’know I used to work for a Spirit Halloween one time. It was a seasonal gig, but this guy was the one in charge of putting up all the displays.”
He looked so proud of himself as he spoke; he was so happy to share his Halloween decoration accomplishments with you. “Oh, wow~” you said sarcastically. “You mean I’m here with a world renowned Halloween decorating connoisseur? And to think I go to the same school as them! Amazing…”
“Alright, butthead. I guess I’ll just leave then.” He got up from the couch and grabbed his drink. “Ahhh, guess all those… fun… fall ideas I had can go down the drain…,” he said in a sulking tone as he took a few steps towards the door before turning back to look at you.
“Don’t give me those eyes, you heathen.” You playfully glared at him, racking your brain to figure out his silly little schemes. “What kind of ‘fun fall ideas’ are you talking about?”
“Oh… it’s nothing. Nothing you wanna go do with me anyways. Guess I’ll have to find another to enjoy this Rugtober with.” He had his hand on the doorknob and a wide grin on his face as he looked at you. He knew what he was doing.
“Rugtober? What the hell is that?” you chuckled as you put your drink down and grabbed your cleaning rag once again.
“Uhh?! Only the best time of the year- and if you wanna join, you have to get a ticket from yours truly.”
You narrowed your eyes at him again and crossed your arms over your chest. “What’s the ticket gonna cost me?”
Ruggie opened the door and took another big sip of his drink. “Where’s the fun in me telling you? I’ll see you tomorrow, at the crack ass of dawn again, shyeheehee~”
“HEY?!” you shouted to him, his head popping back in before the door shut completely. “You’re just gonna leave? I thought you came to help decorate?!”
Ruggie looked around and snickered. “You look like you got it taken care of, Y/N. Seee youuu tomorrroowwwww~,” he sang as the door shut. You stood there and wondered what plans this “Rugtober” season would bring to you. At least this stupid pumpkin drink he brought you was going to fuel you through your cleaning, but you couldn’t help but wonder what he was scheming.
You rubbed your eyes groggily as you made it down the steps. Having just rolled out of bed, your eyes were still struggling to adjust to the light coming in past the curtains on the window. Grim had pounced on you that morning, whining about someone being at the door. You kept telling him there was no way someone would be there so early, the sun had just come up. But you were mistaken.
As you made it off the last step, you could hear light mumbling coming from outside the door. Confused, you quietly approached the door and put your ear to it, trying to make out the muffled sounds. It was hard to really decipher what was actually being said, but it was easy to recognize to whom the voice belonged to.
You threw the door open to find Ruggie standing there on your doorstep, once again. “Ruggie.” Your tone was sullen, clearly from unwillingly being woken up so early. “Oh, turn that frown upside down, sunshine. It’s Rugtober, did you forget? I did tell you that I’d be here again super early.”
He stood there with his hands in his pockets, eyes bright and chipper as if he had been up for hours already. Did he ever take the time to really get in good sleep, or was he always a ‘go-go-go’ person? His outfit consisted of a dark gray shirt with the spell drive team’s logo, a mustard yellow plaid shirt overtop with the sleeves rolled and left unbuttoned, and a plain black pair of joggers and sneakers.
For waking you up so early, you decided to get him back a bit with teasing. “Are you already dressing up for Halloween? Gonna be a scarecrow this year?” You raised an eyebrow at him as he sucked his teeth at your words.
“Yeah,” he grabbed at the bottom hem of the plaid shirt, “this is my scarecrow outfit. You don’t like it?” He looked up at you, giving you sickeningly sweet eyes. It was difficult to not think it was adorable.
“So what is our plan for day 1 of Rugtober, Ruggie?” you asked.
“Two words. Pumpkin. Patch. Well, I guess four words. Also, get and dressed. Maybe six words. Hurry and up, oh seven, already!” He chuckled to himself as he counted on his fingers.
“Okay, okay, mister impatient. Give me like 5 minutes, I’ll be right back. I’ll even wear a flannel so you don’t become a lonely scarecrow today.”
“I’m touched,” he said, putting his hand over his heart. “I’ll be waiting here.”
You shut the door and ran back upstairs, scaring Grim and making him fall off the bed as you came back into your bedroom.
“WAHHHH!!” Grim hit the floor with a thud. “What’d’ya doing scaring me like that?! Who was that?” he asked, rubbing the top of his head.
“It was Ruggie. I have to get dressed, we’re going to a pumpkin patch today. And before you even ask- no you cannot come along.” You rummaged through your drawers and closet, quickly finding clothes to wear, not forgetting the flannel you said you’d wear.
“Hmph, like I wanna go anywhere with him anyway. He never shares his snacks with me,” Grim huffed and stuck his tongue out. His fake disinterest was amusing, you knew he probably really wanted to go, but this was something Ruggie invited you to- not you and Grim.
You finished getting dressed, walked over to him, and put your hand on his head gently, avoiding the spot where he bonked his head moments ago. “How about I bring you a small pumpkin back? Yeah? One you can decorate however you’d like?”
Grim’s ears perked up at your words and he smiled mischievously. “You better bring me back a good one, or you’ll roux the day and feel the wrath of the all powerful mage, Grim!”
“Yeah, yeah. Let’s get you back into bed, o’ powerful one.” You picked him up, put him back on your bed, and watched as he snuggled back up into the covers. “I’ll be back later, be good.” Grim was already half asleep as you left the room and closed the door quietly before meeting Ruggie downstairs.
“Alright, let’s go.” You locked the door as you closed it. Ruggie nodded and turned on his heel, leading the way.
Going towards the town of Sage’s Island, you spotted an old wooden fence with a makeshift sign on it that read “Pumpkin Patch” with an arrow pointing down a small dirt path. Realistically, it seemed odd that a pumpkin patch would be out of the way like this, but you wouldn’t think Ruggie would lead you into danger- at least, not without forewarning you before.
“Why’s it so far out of the way? I feel like we’ve been walking for hours, Ruggie,” you groaned. “Well, if it was right by the road, then there wouldn’t be any room for that.”
You kept walking, staring at the sky above you and not paying attention to the stopped beastman in front of you, running into him and staggering back.
“OOF!” Ruggie said as he caught his balance and turned around and grabbed your hand. “Watch it, klutz,” he teased. “Oh, shut up,” you said as you used his hand to stabilize yourself and tried to reorient yourself. “Wouldn’t be any room for what?” you asked looking everywhere but where Ruggie had been talking about.
“For that.” Ruggie pointed up ahead to a small little hill. There were what looked like hundreds of pumpkins, but what was amazing, leaving you in awe, was the ginormous pumpkin that was in the middle of them all. “Holy shi-”
“Shh, shhh. Language,” Ruggie said, putting a finger to your lips. “Come on” He took your hand and pulled you up the hill, making sure you didn’t clumsily fall down it or run into him again.
The patch was full of many pumpkins, you knew it was going to be hard to find the right one, especially since you promised to get Grim one while you were here, too. The varying sizes and colors and shapes of them all could force someone to spend hours here just trying to find the pumpkin for them.
You could see a small house up higher on the hill with a sign on the front railing that said “Checkout here” on it. An elderly man waved at you and Ruggie from the porch, to which Ruggie shouted up to him. “HEY, MR. JOE! I THINK THIS ONE’S BIGGER THAN LAST YEAR’S!” Ruggie smiled widely as he pointed to the excessively large pumpkin.
Mr. Joe shouted back to him, but he was so far away and seemed so soft spoken that it was hard to make out what he said. Ruggie just waved off the words and turned to whisper to you. “He has no idea what I just said, and I have no idea what he just said.” You both chuckled as you started to look through the patch for your perfect pumpkins to take home.
A plump, orange pumpkin near a back fence caught your eye. It was the perfect roundness for making a jack-o-lantern and the orange was bright and vibrant. You walked over to it and tried to pull it off the vine when you felt a tapping on your shoulder. You glanced up to see Ruggie standing there with two pumpkins in his hands, looking almost upset.
“Ruggie? What’s wrong??” You stopped tugging on the vine to give him your full attention, it was rare to see him in such a state.
“Uh.. Uhm.. well..” he stammered.
“Spit it out already! WHAT, WHAT?!” You stood up and wiped your hands on your pants to get the dirt off.
“What… what do you get when you drop a pumpkin?”
“What do you get? Uh I don’t think you get anything, except a bill to probably pay for it,” you said confused.
“No… squash.”
The upset look on Ruggie’s face immediately changed to a cheeky grin as you rolled your eyes at his joke.
“Do you want me to get that one off the vine for you? Here, hold these.” He shoved the two pumpkins in your hands and knelt to the ground to get your pumpkin off the vine.
“Rug, why did you get two? Getting Leona one or something?”
“Oh, please, he doesn’t carve pumpkins. I figured your pet cat was wantin’ one so I got him a small one.” He traded pumpkins with you, handing you your one and taking his two back. “Yeah, he does want one. I was gonna look for him one next, but you did it for me. Thanks, Rugbert.”
“Hey, hey, hey,” he snapped and leaned in close to you. “Don’t call me that in public.” You knew he was just joking with you, at least mostly. He really did hate being called that in public but there was no one around you two at the patch, and there was no way Mr. Joe could’ve heard the nickname anyway.
You two made your way up to the small house where Mr. Joe was to buy your pumpkins. “Welcome, Welcome!” the man said cheerily from his old rocking chair. “Find the ones y’ere looking for?”
“Yes, sir! Three pumpkins, good and ready. How much for these bad boys?” You held up your pumpkin when Ruggie showed his. Mr. Joe looked back and forth at them for a few moments before responding. “I’d say about 10.”
“Just 10? Feels like I’m robbin’ ya, old man,” Ruggie said as he handed the money to Mr. Joe. “I’ll be back next year, and that pumpkin out there- It better be as big as this house next time.” Ruggie and Mr. Joe chuckled. “O’heehee, you betcha it will be, my boy!”
“Take it easy, you know how to get me if you need me,” Ruggie said walking off the porch. “Err, it was nice meeting you, thank you for the pumpkins, Mr. Joe!” you spit out before tagging along behind Ruggie.
“You come here every year, Rug?”
“Sometimes more than once a year. The old fart’s too old to get house and yard work done, so I come by every now and then when he tells me he needs help and then he always gives me a lil discount when I buy pumpkins. One time I bought pumpkins for all the kids at Sunset Savanna and it only cos’ me like 100 thaumarks. Wild, right?”
“Yeah, that is wild. I bet he likes when you come around, seems lonely all the way out here if you ask me.”
Ruggie smiled and nodded at your words. “We better get you back before Grim starts causing a ruckus and setting the dorm on fire.”
💐 Do they enjoy giving compliments or do they like getting them more? What kind of compliments do they give/like?
Ruggie's basically had to fight tooth and nail for every compliment in his life that didn't come from his grandma, so he's starving for some genuine praise. He tends to get lost in Leona's shadow a lot, so complimenting him on anything he's used to hearing directed Leona's way instead (appearance, cunning, his intelligence) will get his tail wagging like nobody's business.
🤧 How far will they go to take care of their sick s/o?
Ruggie really hates seeing you down and out for the count, especially because that means you're not around to see just how hilarious he's being, so he'll go out of his way to make sure you're getting enough rest and good food. He'll bring you hot soup and extra water bottles from the cafeteria, his gran's quilt that he brought to school with him, and the homework you've missed for the days you've been gone before sprawling himself across the foot of your bed like a loyal dog to work on his own assignments and be right within reach should you need him.
