One of my guilty pleasures about Luigi's Mansion games is how for once Luigi is the one in power, fighting to free Mario who is unable to do anything, trapped as he is in his frame.
And when I put on my angsty/possessive mariocest goggles, I'm thinking about Luigi taking his time to get his brother out of the painting. Caressing the canvas as he takes in Mario's features. Delaying the moment of freeing Mario because when he does, Mario will be everyone's once again, while here, now, he only belongs to Luigi.
He's safe. He's not in danger. He's with his beloved brother. Isn't that enough?
Going down a darker road : Luigi getting Mario out, but only after he made a dark deal with King Boo : Luigi let the ghost king go, and neither fight again, only if King Boo helps him keeping Mario inside the mansion/hotel. Illusion, traps, trickery... anything to prevent the hero from leaving. He has everything he needs at disposal, including Luigi himself, who pretends to not notice anything wrong.
Mario tries getting out, of course, but Luigi doesn't seem to be worried about the situation, so it can't be that bad, right ?
