Yancy and Curtis Headcanons
Yancy and Curtis work at the same idol industry. Both have been at it for a while, but while Curtis is more experienced, Yancy is the rising star, headed for international fame. She’s not sure how she feels about it. Pokemon idol work entails battles as well as pop music, hence why her traded Pokemon have hidden abilities. However, she’s far more interested in raising a couple of Pokemon at a time and caring for them than she is in using plenty sparingly. Work makes her feel like she’s only able to get to know her Pokemon on a perfunctory level. She can’t engage in true trainerhood because she barely knows the Pokemon she’s working with. There are a couple of exceptions, of course, but she’s got ulterior motives for trading with the trainer - it means more Pokemon to star alongside, and a quicker escape from Pokemon that she associates with all of the downsides of work. It’s rather cathartic.
Curtis is the type who, if he had a Pokedex, would obsess over completing it. He loves to catch and breed Pokemon he’s not seen before. He trades out of curiosity, though it’s difficult to find something he’s not already caught. He’s very direct when he’s disappointed - this straightforwardness is aggravated his by constant tiredness. While he’s pleasant, he’ll make it extremely clear what he likes and dislikes. He doesn’t mince words.
He enjoys battle, but he’s more of the sort to experiment and try new things than to actively attempt to win. As long as something interesting occurs, he’s happy with the battle. Meanwhile, Yancy’s fantastic in battle, but using new pokemon every now and again hampers her somewhat.
Curtis was first noticed by a travelling agency while he lived in Galar. He’s from Motostoke, and has a middle-class London accent (think male Dua Lipa). He mostly raps, but sings well when he needs to.
Yancy used to be a gym trainer at Elesa’s old gym. She always envied Elesa, but felt embarrassed by that envy. Elesa could see that Yancy would shine in idol work, and recommended her to an agency. Yancy feels even guiltier now, as Elesa is indirectly responsible for her current success. She often worries she can’t achieve anything on her own, so she gets competitive very quickly.
The two idols hit it off quickly enough - he came to the agency maybe 5 years ago, and she 3.
Both bury a lot of their feelings beneath their work personas. They have to keep up an extroverted exterior - Curtis is actually rather shy, and Yancy’s the sort of extrovert who actually only cares for a couple of her friends (the player character included). Both need more space. But they do love their jobs, though Yancy reconsiders far more than Curtis. She’s equally resilient and capable, but as a result, she’s put under an even more intense pump. She’s not usually at liberty to take as many breaks as he is.
Yancy has a wicked sense of humour, but rarely feels comfortable enough to unveil it. Curtis is prone to awful puns. They’re both far too affectionate for the fleeting idol life, but they stick with it anyway.
