rosekan r63 short fic/kanayn exposition
The reflection of the scene dominated the room, a grandiose reflecting the shirtless blood-drinker, barely covered by a sheet,
beside the lightly tanned blonde male of slim build. He slept, specks of blood staining the white of the linens that covered them.
However, Kanayn could not sleep. Nor could he ever. Rather, he watched. Every breath, inhale, exhale, captivated his intrigue.
It had been so long since he felt the invigoration of air in his lungs bringing him life. He still felt the sting of death in the scar across his abdomen.
He did his best to maintain his gaze on his beloved, allowing time to go by. Despite the slow crawl of the hours, there was no where else he'd rather be, as he knew
this could be one of the last nights they spent so peacefully together.
It had been 4 years, by human account, since the end of the fiasco once called a game. Now, it was merely an incident none dare mention again, for fear of the horrors of the past returning.
All that time, Kanayn and Rene had traveled across both Alternia and Earth, finding escape in the exotic, as well as themselves. Some soldiers go to war and return seeking holiday. They went to the ends of
existence and sought release. Months in Parisian hotels, indulging in wine, blood, and sins of the flesh, to Alternian shores, where they embraced one another in the glow of the great moons. The rest of the humans
as well as the trolls went their seperate ways, some keeping contact, other isolating themselves. Kanayn and Rene, however, saw no one else in the world but each other. Since before the game, Kanayn knew true happiness
everytime he saw his beloved stir from his sleep, to greet him with a smile and a kiss. They were in love, purely so.
It was on a trip to Milan, where Kanayn sought to study the styles of human fashion at its pinnacle that he realized change in his lover. He had already taken into account the factors of their mutual immortality for different reasons, prompting to overlook the jarring differences between their species. As he worked, Rene no longer gazed in his smug yet loving gaze, but rather looked out the window.
Kanayn mentioned his fears to no one. He felt paranoid, extraordinarily so. Perhaps it was his condition, he thought, bringing about unwanted thoughts. Despite this, he became more attached, keeping his eyes upon Rene whenever possible. Even as they walked the streets together, every glance Rene made toward another individual sparked a sense of utter fear within Kanayn's cold, verdant heart.
These fears culminated when the unexpected occurred; for the first time in ages, Rene had company from their previous ventures. Specifically Joan, who in any other circumstance, would be a strange, yet pleasing encounter. However, he could not help but feel threatened by her presence. Rene tried to explain she had flown all the way out from Washington just to visit, and that her time with the others was going well.
He knew very well whom Joan made company with. The other humans, Karket and, worst of all, Serket. Just the thought of him prompted Kanayn to a seething tantrum, retiring to his chamber.
The night after was quiet. No words were shared. As Rene laid beside Kanayn in bed, warmth developed in his eyes. Soon, he began to snivel, fearfully almost. Rene glanced over and offered a slight smile, but soon found himself embracing his lover. Words of hushing and comfort came from the human as the troll found himself in a dire strait. Rene had changed; he could practically smell it upon him, and he knew he could not spend an eternity alongside Kanayn.
In this moment Kanayn truly realized he would, in all likelihood, be destined to walk existence alone.
He fell silent. The following nights were filled with passion-filled expressions of love- or rather, a need for it. However, after every night, Kanayn felt himself grow emptier, colder as well.
Finally, upon a rain-choked day in Autumn, he pressed his lips against his beloved once more, handing a letter to him. No words were needed between the two. They never were. And so Kanayn left Earth, returning to his overgrown hive to spend time in his own isolation.
Not out of sorrow, but out of a need to grow adjusted.
He needed to learn to be alone.
