Game 76: Sonic Dash 2: Sonic Boom Run June2024 Sonic Dash 2: Sonic Boom really didn't have a chance to be good compared to the original Sonic Dash, and it all has to do with the source material. Don't get me wrong, as a television show, I thought Sonic Boom was well acted and written, but it just never translated well into a game. From the Rise of Lyric disaster to it's character design to it's rather empty world both in the tv show and gaming world. Sonic Boom just never felt like it was filled or varied enough to really warrant the split between it's gaming universes.
In comes Sonic Dash 2, a tie in game for a great show that kept getting it's time slot moved around and wasn't marketed very well. As much as I like to praise the show, the sequel to Sonic Dash makes a lot of confusing decisions that just don't work for an endless runner. First off, the cast of characters is drastically lowered from a rather hefty roster to less than 10 characters. Each character is given a unique ability which seems neat at first till you realize that Knuckles is the best character and using anyone else is rather pointless. Add that to events being mildly tweaked runs that are ridiculously hard to win, a sprite system that has no charm what so ever from either the games or the show, and unlock conditions for characters that are trying to push you to spend money. At no point did I look at Sonic Dash 2 and think to myself that I want to keep running it or experience more of the game because it's kinda alright there in the first run you go thru. There's like 3 different worlds to explore that feel far more samey compared to it's prequel game. There's no bosses or variety stages in it's endless run mode. And the game's soundtrack feels rather generic and boring compared to the usual hits we get from Sonic games.
It's not so much that mechanically it got endless runners wrong like Ultimate Sackboy did, but it just doesn't have anything eye-catching to warrant playing it over other games. If it was completely free and devoid of ads, I would be more inclined to be nicer to it, but with the way hikes up it's ranking and unlocking system so you keep playing it more makes me realize this game was only made to take advantage of fans of the show. The game has no heart, little effort to make it functional, and is mostly just boring. Not only is it's prequel better, it's still getting updated unlike this mess.
