I've just finished the first third of Dune by Frank Herbert, and I wanted to collect my thoughts before I continue to read the book.
I've heard several people saying that Dune is hard to follow, that you don't know what's going on the first hundred pages or so. But truth be told, I think the tale is spun using all the classic ways. Not to say there are no surprises, but you can keep track of the storyline if you so wish.
I actually liked the relationship that Duke Leto and Jessica have a lot, and I'm a little sad that the entire book isn't just about their marriage. I think Jessica is a very interesting character, and I really like her struggle between duty and heart. I hope that she'll be a large part of the story to come.
That said, I actually don't really like Paul. In the beginning, I think he had potential as a character, but by the end of part one (when his powers awoke), I think her turned cold in an unflattering way that a lot of men are portrayed in medias.
I kind of cheated, and read the end (but let's face it - the book is so old that me not knowing the end by now is a miracle in itself), and I'm glad to see that most survive, but I fret that I will resent their paths wholeheartedly.
