Old Silver Beach New Year's Day Run & Dunk Event
My 2015 running and racing Cape Cod kicked off with the Old Silver Beach New Year's Day Run & Dunk 5.7-miler.
That's right, on New Year's Day I heaved myself out of bed to be at the Sea Crest Hotel in Falmouth for 9:15 A.M. Fisherman and I hosted a New Year's party for our close friends and we didn't stagger into bed until sometime after 2:00 A.M. So my groggy attendance is an automatic win!!!
For the record, I did not dunk. I do not dunk in icy cold water - ever.
But I was happy to participate in this event.
First, this race was in support of women who suffer from domestic violence. The Cape Cod Center for Women is the only 24-hour, 7-day-a-week confidential domestic violence emergency shelter serving Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket. The Center is dedicated to providing quality programs and services to individuals and families escaping violence or abuse. We need more awareness to this Center so I was happy to make my $30.00 donation/pay my race registration fee. The entire entry fee went to this Center. I love running for great causes such as this one.
The start and finish was at the Sea Crest Hotel in Falmouth. The 5.7-mile course was beautiful in spots where I could see the ocean. At approximately the 2-mile mark the air was thick with salty sea wind. I took in the scenery and the aromas of the ocean because my drowsiness directly correlated to my lead-footed running.
Secondly, I met a friendly runner from New Hampshire who was sporting the Garmin 220 watch and in my excitement I stepped out of character and spoke to this unknown person about her watch. I am in desperate need of a new one and the one she was using was the same one I'm inches from purchasing. So it was fortuitous that I was able to pick her brain. Low and behold she said she could not in good conscience recommend the watch.
Now I'm back to the drawing board for my search for a replacement running watch. So far I like the Garmin GPS 15 in purple.
Overall, there is no better way to commence a new year than with a run for an admirable cause. I am glad I schlepped my fatigued body out of bed to run for the women of Cape Cod who are victims of domestic violence. And I opened the Winter Warrior series with a strong 5.7-miles.
