Alexander didn’t realize he’d been holding his breath, so when he finally breathed out and let go of the tension in his shoulders, a deep sigh fell from his lips as he ruffled a hand through his hair. He was still holding the basketball - the one he’d snatched from Rupert’s hand just as the youngster’s parents had walked out - under his arm, and finally he let it drop to the floor and bounce away as he glanced back sideways to the other.
The problem wasn’t so much that both the window and the statue from the foyer were now broken. Alex was sure they’d have those things fixed or replaced in no time, and he’d be sure to write a check before he left (more for the gesture than any need for money). But just inside, the fancy reception had moved into the ‘speech’ part of the evening, and if Rupert’s parents were anything like his own family, that would be the most important part of the evening. Certainly a portion of the evening that was not to be disturbed by the crashing of glass.
Think they bought it? the young man asked Alexander, and the latter smiled mischievously as he shrugged. “They have no reason not to believe it was me. I was holding the ball. Right? Don’t worry,” he told the other before walking back up the stairs towards the terrace. “Come on, let’s head back inside anyway. Probably best to postpone our impromptu basketball lesson until all the fancy-heads have gone home.”
