(May 2, 2016)– The Foundation for Rural Service (FRS) announced today that it has awarded a total of $150,000 in college scholarships to 67 students in rural communities served by members of NTCA–The Rural Broadband Association, including four STEM-focused JSI Scholarships, two TMS Scholarships, and one Everett Kneece Scholarship.
Hailey Kellum from Roundup, Montana, is the winner of this year’s Everett Kneece Scholarship for $7,000. Kellum was chosen from over 1,400 applicants. According to the FRS, Kellum’s application was “stellar and showcased not only their academic dedication but an incredible amount of pride in their rural community.” Only one student received the $7,000 Everett Kneece Scholarship.
Kellum, a senior at Roundup High School, will be attending Carroll College in the fall. She will pursue a degree in Physics and Applied Mathematics at Carroll’s Honor College.
The FRS College Scholarship Program awards one-time scholarships to students from rural America for their first year of college, university or vocational-technical school. Each student is sponsored by an NTCA member company. Kellum’s sponsor is Mid-Rivers Communications.
“The Foundation for Rural Service college scholarship winners have not only proven academic excellence—often despite a range of challenging circumstances in their lives—but have also shown an incredible commitment to their rural communities. FRS and our rural telecom partners are proud to support these exemplary students in their pursuit of higher education,” said FRS Executive Director Jessica Golden. “We hope these scholarships will make a significant impact on the students and leave them with a lasting impression of support and a sense of community pride. We congratulate all of our awardees and wish them well in their future careers!”
Mid-Rivers’ General Manager, Michael Candelaria, also commented, “Mid-Rivers was proud to sponsor Hailey and several other applicants again this year for the FRS Scholarship opportunities. We are fortunate to have so many high-achieving students who also have such great rural and community pride.”
