The People's Guide
Locals shared their favorite sites, local lore, scenic routes and personal landmarks by creating guide pages for inclusion in the People’s Guide of Allegany County.
Exhibited at the Fosdick Nelson Gallery in Alfred, New York. Visitors to the gallery also added 'personal landmarks' to the large magnetic map of the local county.

Donated By is a slideshow of images and the result of our attempt to visually ‘exhaust the museum’ with a hat tip to writer Georges Perec and his An Attempt at Exhausting a Place in Paris. Like Perec, we spent time observing and documenting a place, in this case, a local historical museum. We looked at what was contained, how it was organized, and in turn what those things said about the people in the surrounding village, both past and present. Using our camera lens, we looked beyond the major narratives, and captured images that express fleeting moments and unfocused details. These moments flickering one after the other, allow new stories that are ‘hidden in plain sight’ to emerge.
This project is a collaboration between Michelle Illuminato and Brett Hunter.
Seeing Double Allegany County, New York A series of 10 double images. In our minds eye we see the rural landscape as peaceful: in perfect tune with nature. The air is clean, the water runs pure, and the people living there understand their land. Yet an exploration of rural space would quickly reveal the traces of past and present technologies that disrupt and consume the land and it’s resources.
