Chaos
Aleyanna chose not to take the airship back to the Refuge. Instead, she chose to waypoint directly from Rurikton, fees be damned. After what she had witnessed, she didn’t want to take anything to chance. Especially with what she had to witness.
Sure, she didn’t agree with the premise of the Ebonhawke Independence Party. But still, she didn’t want to see anyone almost be assassinated if it could be helped, especially a friend of Renita’s. And it strickened her to see that a place she had called home once, relatively speaking, was living up to a name of chaos, destruction, and sorrow.
As she walked towards the house, she wondered what all to say when the inevitable questions were asked. She was just afraid that people would assume that now, the Reach was just a lost cause.
Doubts About the Blade
For the most part, the Blade who stood guard within the walls of the palace and the Throne Room itself, had worked together for many years. They were as close as family and welcomed the younger generations with open arms and great expectations. For the ones who had served together the longest, it was easy to tell when someone was not acting like themselves, for better or not.
Blade Devon Carlyle was among them, and couldn't help but notice the recent changes in Blade Tietra LaCoria; a woman with whom he had served the past fourteen years. Several recent events had caught his attention. First was his colleagues’ sudden and several leaves of absence. Additionally there was the unexpected move to Ebonhawke while her family's estate was being “renovated”. Most noticeably were the changes in her usual mood; where once she had been somber and serious, she appeared giddier as of late.
His attempts at learning more from her close friend, family Steward, and fellow Blade Andrew Rosenheim had yielded him nothing from the mysterious man. There were also no clues to be gained from rumors, as Lady LaCoria was a very private woman. Not wanting to harm the woman's reputation should he be wrong in what his observations were telling him, he chose today to confront her directly.
“Lady LaCoria,” his deep voice was stern and full of confidence. Catching her attention as she emerged from changing, he bowed his head respectfully. “May I have bit a few minutes of your time?”
“Of course Carlyle,” within that soft voice and kindly smile was an edge of suspicion. Obviously she and Rosenheim had spoken, making his current actions even riskier.
“May I walk you to Rurikton? I mean not to keep you from home too long.” Gesturing towards the door that led from the barracks, he received a nod from the brunette. Her pace was quickly and he hurried to catch up, matching the rhythm set by the clicking heels of her leather boots. Moving to her side, he did his best to leave enough room for the billowing length of her green leather jacket. “As you may already know, I have been worrying lately; namely about you and the numerous changes in your life as of late. I had hoped speaking with you would alleviate my fears that these changes were having an impact on your ability to protect our Queen.”
“I am as fit and capable as ever of performing my duties. I will admit I am curious as to why you have taken it upon yourself to investigate me. What exactly do you think you will uncover?” Despite the harshness of her words, still her voice was calm as they strode through the cobblestone streets towards Rurikton.
“Part of me fears you may be in some trouble you wish not to speak of. You've been taking several unexpected leaves of absence, and you recently vacated your home here in the city. I know there are several potential explanations, but one is that you've experienced heavy financial setbacks.” Glancing sidelong at the woman, he studied her tanned face for any reaction. The last thing he expected from her, was laughter as she stopped in place.
“I fear your assumptions are as far from the truth as possible. Like many, I moved my family to Ebonhawke while Kryta weathers this current storm. My reasons for leave are my own, but I will say that all have been related to loved ones in the jungle.” Shaking her head in disappointment with her colleague, she let out a small sigh. “Do you have any further questions, or may I return home in peace?”
“One more my lady,” his pride and confidence already shattered by her disapproval, there was nothing to lose now. “What of your recent changes in mood?”
Once again his query was met with soft, rich laughter. Feeling his face grow warm with embarrassment, he was grateful as she seemed to ignore him, resuming her walk and stepping past him. The next few clicks of her heels sounded like drums in his ears over the other sounds of the city. Her voice cut in softly without warning as he stood there, “it's called being in love dear.”
