First Fruit Offerings on Semik (Thursday of Green Week/Rusalia)
Green week is only fleetingly mentioned in my primary sources about Czech calendar customs as Rusalia. It is described as the echo of old pagan customs honoring the dead.
So even though in much of the Slavic world this week is devoted to appeasing a particular type of ancestor—the unclean dead—I’m just focusing on honoring my ancestors in general.
Since birches are heavily associated with Green Week, after I gave Děduška his first fruits, I headed down to the river birch to leave some for any spirits that might be hanging out there.

A blessed Semik to those who celebrate.
Happy Pentecost Eve!!!

I’m already starting to work on my plans for Spring. I started saving my onion skins for Spring Equinox and Easter on Distaff day (for dying eggs). I’m thinking I’ll have to do two batches of eggs this year as Spring Equinox and Easter are a month apart. 🤞 hoping egg prices don’t go up even more—I paid $.72 an egg yesterday.
I’m reading The Dancing Goddesses by Elizabeth Wayland Barber and am really interested in incorporating some of the customs from Green Week/Rusalia (partly working with the Rusalka and somewhat with the ancestors) into my practice. When I leafed through my little booklet on the customs of my ancestors in Zjnomo in Moravia, Green Week/Rusalia IS mentioned.
However, the first week of June here is pretty much Summer. Everything is fully green and temperatures in the high 80s F.
According to Barber:
The farther north one goes, the later the date of budding and blossoming, so similar rituals occur in the Balkans in March, in Britain on May Day, in Russia on Semik (the seventh Thursday after Easter, hence mid-May to June), and in Scandinavia at the summer solstice.
According to this map I live in an area closer to the Balkans as to when Spring falls:
So, I’m considering working some ideas of Green Week/Rusalia into March. Now—do I drown Morana at an earlier date than I have been? And I need to decide if I should do my bird pastries earlier.
