Rush question of the day: Who do you think the New World Man in question might actually be?
I didn't really think about it until recently, but I feel like it might be Neil himself. Which would actually be kind of sweet since Geddy's singing about one of his best friends 😊💛❤️
I think Neil speaks of himself and of all the North American men of his generation living in the 80s, that's why he compares this New World Man to the Old World Man and the Third World Man.
"The song was the last and most quickly composed song on the album, stemming from a suggestion by then-Rush producer Terry Brown to even out the lengths of the two sides of the cassette version." (Wikipedia)
I think Neil was having those ideas in mind already, so when he was asked to quickly write some lyrics, he did it about how he was feeling about those matters.
And yes, I think, as Geddy said he needs to identify with the lyrics if he has to sing them, he felt like a new world man and also saw his dear friends as ones of his kind, especially Neil :)
