She knew Dr. Rush by sight: her area of study was animal disease, and his was quantum stuff that she'd never really understood, but he had written some paper that had gotten the university a lot of funding, and he was a complete bastard.
He smelled like coffee and cigarettes as he slid his selections onto the counter and drummed his fingers on his legs.
"I need your ID," she said firmly, though really, she could have just written his name in the ledger as she would in a few moments. "Rules, sorry." He gave her a terse smile, irritated underneath, and found his university ID, which scarcely looked like him: the picture was faded, and at least seven years old. "Thanks!" she said brightly, and took her time writing the due dates in the inside cards.
"Thank you," he said, and paused to give her an odd look as he walked off.
He was gone a few minutes before she realized he had left his ID.
